Mazda Australia has initiated a safety recall for certain units of the MX-5 (ND) models manufactured between 2016 and 2018, powered by the 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine.

What’s the defect, and why is it so serious?

According to the official recall notice (reference REC-006444), a manufacturing defect may cause the fuel pipe to become damaged over time due to vibration and prolonged high RPM use of the N.A. engine. If the fuel pipe is damaged, fuel may leak. This leakage could lead to a loss of motive power while driving and, in the presence of an external ignition source, may result in a vehicle fire.

A loss of engine power or a fire while driving presents serious safety hazards, including increased risk of accidents, injury, or worse for vehicle occupants and bystanders.

Which vehicles are affected?

  • Make: Mazda
  • Model: MX-5 (ND)
  • Model Years: 2016–2018
  • Variants: 1.5L Petrol engine model
  • Total Affected Units in Australia: 1,174

A list of affected VINs has been published. Mazda MX-5 (ND) owners are encouraged to check if their vehicle is included in the recall.

What should owners do now?

Mazda Australia is preparing the required repair. Once ready, the company will contact all affected customers and request that they take their vehicles to their preferred Mazda dealer. At the dealership, technicians will replace the fuel pipe with a modified version to correct the defect — the repair will be performed at no cost to the owner. Owners are encouraged to wait for notification and, until the remedy is available, drive with caution. If any signs of fuel smell or engine trouble are observed, owners should stop driving and contact Mazda immediately.
