Thunder flagship returns to the Mazda BT-50 range

The Mazda BT-50 Thunder returns as the range-topping variant for 2026. It is offered exclusively as a dual-cab 4×4 pickup paired with the 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Based on the GT pickup, the Thunder adds several off-road-focused and styling upgrades.

Key Thunder features include:

  • Single-hoop bull bar
  • Lightforce Beast driving lights
  • Reinforced anti-slip side steps
  • Steel sports bar
  • Manual roller tonneau cover
  • Gloss black door handles
  • Unique Thunder decals

These additions are intended to improve off-road capability while also giving the flagship model a more rugged visual presence.

The Mazda BT-50 Thunder carries a manufacturer’s list price of $78,400.

New Mazda BT-50 Boss grade joins the lineup

Mazda has also introduced the Mazda BT-50 Boss, a new mid-range variant positioned between the XT and XTR grades.

Available exclusively as a 3.0-litre 4×4 dual-cab pickup, the Boss builds on the XT specification while adding several styling and practicality upgrades.

Mazda BT-50 Boss highlights:

  • Gloss black door and tailgate handles
  • Gloss black exterior mirrors
  • Black steel sports bar
  • Tub liner
  • Side steps

The new variant is launched with an introductory drive-away offer of $58,990.

More technology for key Mazda BT-50 variants

Beyond the two new grades, Mazda has also expanded the availability of driver-assistance technology across the range.

A 360-degree camera system is now fitted to XTR, GT and SP pickup variants, improving manoeuvrability in tight spaces and adding convenience during daily driving or off-road use.

Wide range of variants remain

The 2026 Mazda BT-50 range continues to offer a broad selection of 20 variants, spanning single-cab chassis, freestyle chassis, and dual-cab pickup configurations.

According to Jarrod Gieschen, Marketing and Sales Director at Mazda Australia, the expanded lineup gives buyers more flexibility depending on how they use their ute.

“The BT-50 plays an integral role in Mazda Australia’s lineup, and these two new model grades provide customers with more choice, whether they need a ute for the jobsite or for towing and touring,” he said.

Colour options

The 2026 Mazda BT-50 is available in the following exterior finishes:

  • Red Earth Metallic
  • Sailing Blue Metallic
  • True Black Mica
  • Geode White Pearl
  • Concrete Grey Mica
  • Ingot Silver Metallic
  • Ice White

Metallic, mica and pearl paints attract a $695 premium.
