Mercedes-AMG has revealed a significantly updated GLE 53 lineup, introducing enhanced electrification, higher performance figures, and a more expressive design across both SUV and Coupé body styles.
The refreshed range now offers two distinct electrified powertrains 48-volt mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid. while retaining the brand’s core focus on performance-led engineering.
Two electrified powertrains, one AMG philosophy

At the centre of the updated lineup is a revised 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine, paired with electrification in two forms:
- Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ (mild hybrid)
- 330 kW + 17 kW boost
- Up to 640 Nm (with overboost)
- 0–100 km/h: 4.8 seconds
- Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ (plug-in hybrid)
- Combined output: 430 kW (585 hp)
- System torque: 750 Nm
- 0–100 km/h: 4.5 seconds
The plug-in hybrid variant adds a 135 kW electric motor, delivering immediate torque and eliminating turbo lag. It also enables electric-only driving at speeds up to 140 km/h.
Electric range and charging

The plug-in hybrid brings a notable shift in usability, offering:
- Up to 93 km electric range (WLTP)
- Standard 11 kW AC charging
- Optional 60 kW DC fast charging
- 10–80% charge in approximately 20 minutes
This allows many daily commutes to be completed without using the combustion engine.
Engine upgrades improve response and rev range

AMG has reworked the inline-six engine with:
- New cylinder head and camshaft
- Larger intake system
- Increased turbo boost pressure (1.5 bar)
For the mild-hybrid version, enhancements include:
- More powerful electric auxiliary compressor (7.5 kW)
- Second-generation integrated starter-generator
The result is sharper throttle response, a broader torque band, and stronger high-rev performance.
Chassis and dynamics: broader capability
The updated Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 range continues to balance performance with usability:
- AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension standard
- Optional AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL with active roll stabilisation
- Fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive
A recalibrated ESP system and updated suspension software improve both cornering precision and ride comfort.
Design updates sharpen visual presence

Exterior changes focus on a more aggressive stance:
- Revised AMG grille and air intakes
- New LED lighting signatures
- Star-pattern taillights
- Updated exhaust design
A new MANUFAKTUR “hightech silver magno” finish joins the colour palette, alongside expanded customisation options.
Interior: digital and performance-focused

Inside, the updates lean heavily on technology and material upgrades:
- Latest MB.OS infotainment system
- AMG-specific performance displays
- Updated AMG Performance steering wheel with haptic controls
- Expanded MANUFAKTUR interior trims
Drivers also get multiple driving modes, including hybrid-specific settings such as Electric and Battery Hold, allowing better control over energy usage.
Efficiency meets performance
Despite the performance gains, efficiency has improved:
- Plug-in hybrid fuel consumption as low as 3.8–4.2 L/100 km (combined with electric)
- CO₂ emissions reduced to as low as 86 g/km
The mild-hybrid version, meanwhile, is already engineered to meet upcoming EU7 emissions standards.
Positioning: performance without compromise
With this update, Mercedes-AMG is clearly repositioning the GLE 53 range as a dual-purpose performance SUV, capable of both high-speed driving and low-emission commuting.
The addition of a long-range plug-in hybrid system signals a broader shift: performance SUVs are no longer just about outright power, but also everyday efficiency and regulatory readiness.
Key takeaway
The updated GLE 53 lineup blends traditional AMG performance with meaningful electrification. The plug-in hybrid, in particular, stands out as the more versatile option—offering near-flagship performance alongside usable electric range.
