MG Motor Australia has re‑shuffled its MG 5 line‑up for 2025, axing the non‑turbo Vibe grade and fitting a raft of safety upgrades. These changes see the small sedan lift its ANCAP score from zero to three stars. The price of admission, however, jumps by up to $8000 once the current run‑out offers expire.

What’s new for 2025?

Safety first

Front and rear outboard seat‑belt pre‑tensioners, seat‑belt reminders, whiplash‑mitigating seats, updated autonomous emergency braking with turn‑across‑traffic detection, lane‑keep assist and adaptive cruise control.

The additional hardware/software lifts the MG 5 built from November 2024 to three stars – a significant improvement on last year’s zero‑star result.

Single trim only

Only the turbo‑petrol MG 5 Essence remains for the affordably priced small sedan; the previous entry-grade MG 5 Vibe with its naturally-aspirated petrol engine is discontinued.

MG 5 rivals

The MG 5 is no longer the sub‑$25 k sedan it once was, yet at $32,990 drive‑away the refreshed Essence still undercuts mainstream hybrid hatches and matches well‑equipped rivals such as the Kia K4 (from $34,990 D/A) and entry Mazda 3 (from $32,290 +ORC).

The 2025 MG 5 Essence reaches dealers nationwide later in June.
