MG4 EV Urban has been recently tested and awarded a 5-star ANCAP safety rating under the stringent 2023–2025 protocols. The 2026 five-star MG4 EV Urban ANCAP rating makes this car one of the safest, most affordable cars Down Under.

This small electric hatchback is available in two battery options (43kWh and 54kWh) and features front-wheel drive (FWD), differentiating it from the standard, sportier rear-wheel-drive (RWD) MG4 models.

MG4 EV Urban safety score breakdown

AssessmentCar Safety Score
Adult occupant protection87% (34.88/40)
Child occupant protection86% (42.62/49)
Vulnerable road user protection85% (54.12/63)
Safety assist82% (14.78/18)

Adult occupant protection – 87%

The MG4 EV Urban had a strong score for frontal offset crash test but a 1.58-point penalty due to compatibility risks with other vehicles. Full width frontal test was rated GOOD overall, but rear passenger head protection rated MARGINAL.

Side impact was near-perfect, with GOOD protection across all critical body regions. Oblique pole test showed a light drop due to ADEQUATE chest protection

Centre airbag delivered GOOD head protection for both front occupants in side impacts. The car had a stable cabin structure and maintained survival space in a crash. Multi-collision braking could help prevent secondary impacts.

Child occupant protection – 86%

MG4 EV Urban scored full points for frontal offset and side impact tests for 6 and 10-year-old child dummies. It has ISOFIX and top tether anchors across rear seats. Centre rear seat has limitations for some booster seats. The car was fitted with a Child presence detection system but did not meet ANCAP requirements, costing points.

Vulnerable road user protection – 85%

The EV’s bonnet and windscreen provided better protection to the head of a dummy pedestrian than the stiff windscreen pillars and bonnet sides. The pedestrian’s pelvis and lower legs were protected (GOOD) at all spots.

AEB Pedestrian was GOOD and avoided/mitigated all forward collisions. AEB Cyclist was also GOOD across all speeds and turning scenarios. AEB Motorcyclist was GOOD overall, but lane-keeping response rated WEAK. Cyclist anti-dooring alert warned occupants of approaching bikes.

Safety assist – 82%

MG4 EV Urban’s AEB (Car, Junction, Crossing, Head-On) was rated GOOD and avoided or reduced crashes even at intersections. Lane Keep Assist and Emergency Lane Keeping were GOOD in critical scenarios.

Speed Sign Recognition plus Adaptive Cruise adjusted speed automatically. Driver Monitoring System detected fatigue and distraction. Slight score deductions came from fine-tuning of speed assist and driver monitoring systems.
