MG Motor has announced fresh details for its all-new MGU9 ute for Australia and New Zealand, confirming three trim levels and indicative pricing ahead of launch.

The new model, which MG says has been tailored for Australian conditions, will be priced from $55,000 to $65,000 in Australia, available in the following grades:
- Explore
- Explore X
- Explore Pro
Pre-orders are now open through MG’s website and dealerships, with customers who reserve early eligible for a $1,000 accessory package. Final details on launch events, warranty and delivery timing will be confirmed later this year.
A ute with SUV-inspired comfort

MG is positioning the MGU9 as a dual-purpose vehicle, combining the rugged strength of a work-ready ute with the cabin comfort and technology usually found in SUVs.
Inside, MGU9 comes with MultiFold rear seating, up to 32 storage compartments, and the option of premium vegan leather upholstery. The brand claims this layout is designed to adapt to both work and leisure needs.
Key cabin features of the MGU9

- Smart Hatch Access: Available on the Explore Pro, the rear cabin window retracts electronically, providing full access between the cabin and the tub.
- MultiFold Seating: Rear seats can fold flat, creating a pass-through to the tub when combined with the Smart Hatch. The front passenger seat can also fold back to form a flat resting surface.
- Cockpit-Inspired Controls: Features include an aircraft-style gear selector and a horizontal infotainment display with voice-command functionality.
- Storage Options: A sliding centre console, hidden cup holders and multiple compartments aim to improve practicality.
Designed for versatility

According to MG, the MGU9 is intended for a broad range of buyers, from tradespeople and rural drivers to families looking for a versatile weekend vehicle.
Kevin Gannon, MG Motor Australia’s business director, said the lineup was created to combine “comfort, capability and innovation,” adding that buyers would not have to choose between practicality and advanced features.
How does MGU9 compare to rivals?

With a starting price of around $55,000, the MGU9 enters the same territory as established dual-cab utes such as the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger, both of which dominate Australian sales charts. The Toyota Hilux starts at a driveaway price of $57,904, and the Ford Ranger at $57,677 driveaway. Squarely undercutting its rivals, the MGU9 is positioning itself as a competitively priced, feature-packed option in the segment.
Performance specification pending

While MG has confirmed some details about the U9’s engine and powertrain, official performance specifications for the ute are not yet fully available. The vehicle shares its 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and four-wheel-drive system with its LDV Terron 9 cousin. Government certification documents list the peak power as 160 kW, but MG has not released official torque figures or other performance metrics such as acceleration or top speed.
For context, the Terron 9 produces 163 kW and 520 Nm of torque, but these figures have not been officially confirmed for the U9. MG has stated that the ute retains a 3,500 kg braked towing capacity, and preliminary documents indicate a payload range of 880–1,102 kg, depending on the variant.
Until MG provides full details, we will have to wait for complete performance figures closer to the vehicle’s launch.
What’s next for MGU9?
Further information, including a detailed equipment list, safety technology, and confirmed warranty coverage, is expected to be announced in the coming months.
The MGU9 joins a growing field of new utes entering the Australian market, where demand for dual-cab workhorses remains strong.
