Mitsubishi has introduced the Elevance Concept at the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show, a large plug-in hybrid SUV that highlights the company’s approach to electrification and advanced all-wheel-drive systems. Although not mentioned by Mitsubishi, this concept also revives discussion around the possible reintroduction of the Pajero nameplate, which ended production in 2021.

Exterior design

The Elevance Concept features Mitsubishi’s latest interpretation of its Dynamic Shield design, with visual elements reminiscent of recent global offerings such as the Xforce and Destinator. Its fascia incorporates a multi-tier LED lighting setup and a closed honeycomb-style grille.

A linear roofline, sculpted side panels, and an angular rear section contribute to a streamlined profile. The vehicle also includes transparent lower door panels that could allow passengers to enjoy the scenery in motion, along with solar roof elements. However, these are conceptual design features unlikely to reach production.

Interior and features

The cabin of the Mitsubishi Elevance Concept adopts a minimalist layout focused on digital integration. A full-width display spans the dashboard from pillar to pillar, accompanied by a steering-wheel-mounted screen. Mitsubishi also highlights an AI-powered Co-Driver feature that can analyse driving patterns and suggest destinations.

The three-row configuration of the Elevance concept features six-seats with second-row captain’s chairs and front seats that rotate rearward when the vehicle is stationary. A floating centre console houses a rotary controller, while exterior cameras provide visibility around the vehicle, including blind-spot views.

Powertrain and performance

As a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) pioneer, Mitsubishi continues to push the envelope with the Elevance. The concept SUV is powered by a quad-motor 4WD system incorporating the brand’s proprietary Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) technology. It also features dual-motor Active Yaw Control at the rear.

While official specifications remain undisclosed, Mitsubishi says the setup delivers enhanced on-road handling and off-road capability, offering a balance of comfort and control across varied terrain. The company also mentions a “large-capacity” battery, hinting at a focus on a triple-figure electric-only driving range and improved efficiency overall for long range travel between fuel stops.

Mitsubishi Elevance Concept

During the press conference at the Tokyo show, Takao Kato, president and chief executive officer, Mitsubishi Motors, stated:  “We chose ‘Forever Adventure’ as our booth theme to express our passion for delivering the timeless wonder of exploration. This spirit comes to life in models that embody the essence of Mitsubishi Motors – such as the Mitsubishi Elevance Concept, which integrates the best of our electrification and all-wheel control technologies”.

Potential Mitsubishi Pajero connection

The Mitsubishi Elevance Concept arrives amid speculation about the revival of the iconic Mitsubishi Pajero. Reports from Japan’s Best Car Web in 2024 suggested Mitsubishi could relaunch the Pajero name on a plug-in hybrid SUV related to the Outlander, potentially in 2027.

The Pajero’s last iteration ended production in 2021, but Mitsubishi executives have expressed interest in bringing back a flagship SUV. Given the brand’s track record with concept-to-production transitions, the Mitsubishi Elevance could form the design and technological foundation for that revival — possibly as a modern, unibody, three-row PHEV successor.

What does it mean for Mitsubishi’s future?

The Elevance Concept highlights Mitsubishi’s design and engineering direction, focusing on electrification, connected technologies, and all-terrain capability. Whether it evolves into a production vehicle or informs the design of future SUVs, the concept marks a significant step in the brand’s transition for a lineup focussed on electrified offerings.
