Key highlights

  • The next-generation Nissan X-Trail is expected in Australia by the end of 2027, around a year after the US launch.
  • The new Rogue Hybrid uses Nissan’s e-Power system, with electric motors driving the wheels and a petrol engine generating electricity.
  • A redesigned cabin brings larger displays, wireless smartphone connectivity and additional driver-assistance technology, although Australian specifications remain unconfirmed.

Anyone waiting on the next Nissan X-Trail won’t be waiting as long as last time. Nissan Australia says the next-generation T34-series SUV is due here by the end of 2027, only about a year after its left-hand drive sibling, the Rogue, goes on sale in the US.

Next Nissan X-Trail to arrive sooner

Nissan X-Trail

The next-generation Nissan X-Trail is due to arrive in Australia by late 2027, with Nissan aiming to significantly shorten the gap between overseas launches and local availability. The upcoming T34-series X-Trail will follow the new Nissan Rogue Hybrid, its left-hand drive sibling, which is scheduled to reach US dealerships during the northern autumn of 2026. That puts the Australian launch roughly a year after the American rollout begins.

Nissan Oceania managing director Steve Milette has indicated that the company’s revised vehicle development approach will help bring right-hand drive models to market sooner. Nissan Australia has also pushed for production of the right-hand drive version to be brought forward. The current T33-series X-Trail arrived in Australia in late 2022, more than two years after the previous-generation Rogue reached US dealerships. Cutting that gap roughly in half would give Australian buyers access to the new model much earlier in its lifecycle. Australian pricing, final specifications and the local variant lineup have not been announced.

New Rogue Hybrid previews e-Power technology

The 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid provides an early indication of what to expect from the next X-Trail, particularly under the bonnet. It uses Nissan’s e-Power hybrid system, which pairs a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a battery and electric motors. Unlike a conventional hybrid, the petrol engine acts as a generator rather than directly driving the wheels. The electric motors handle propulsion.

The US-market Rogue Hybrid combines a 149kW front electric motor with a 99kW rear motor, delivering a total system output of 165kW. Nissan’s US figures put combined fuel consumption at approximately 6.2L/100km. For context, the current Australian X-Trail e-Power AWD produces 157kW, meaning the new Rogue Hybrid has an 8kW increase in total system output. These figures relate to the US model and should not be treated as confirmed specifications for Australia.

The Rogue Hybrid also features a 1.67kWh lithium-ion battery and a one-pedal driving mode, which allows the driver to control much of the car’s acceleration and deceleration using the accelerator pedal. Whether Australia will receive the same powertrain configuration remains unclear. Nissan currently offers the X-Trail e-Power with e-4ORCE all-wheel drive, while front-wheel drive e-Power variants are also being added to the existing range.

Sharper styling and a redesigned interior

Nissan X-Trail

The new Rogue adopts more angular exterior styling, with sharper body creases and darker chrome detailing. It retains the existing platform, including MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. At 4651mm long, 1849mm wide and 1720mm tall, the US-market model has a 2705mm wheelbase. These dimensions offer a useful guide to the vehicle’s footprint, although Australian specifications may differ.

Inside, the redesigned dashboard features either a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and matching digital instrument cluster, or larger 14.3-inch displays, depending on the variant. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included with both infotainment setups. The larger system adds Google Built-in, including Google Maps and Google Gemini.

Nissan has also retained physical controls for key functions, including temperature and fan speed. Other available equipment includes a head-up display, ventilated front seats, heated front and rear seats, a panoramic sunroof and wireless phone charging. The extent to which these features will be offered in Australia is yet to be confirmed.

Safety technology and seating remain key questions

The new Rogue Hybrid includes a broad range of driver-assistance systems, including lane-keep assist, active blind-spot assistance, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. Higher-specification versions add features such as a 360-degree camera system, reverse autonomous emergency braking and enhanced ProPilot Assist functions. Some versions also offer assistance with lane changes and hands-off driving in low-speed traffic conditions. The US Rogue Hybrid is strictly a five-seater. However, the X-Trail has traditionally offered a third row in selected markets, so whether the next Australian model will retain a seven-seat option remains an open question.

Nissan says it has sold nearly two million e-Power-equipped vehicles across 68 countries since the technology debuted in 2016. In Australia, the system is currently available in the X-Trail and Qashqai. With the next X-Trail expected by late 2027, Australian buyers have a clearer timeframe for the replacement, but will need to wait for Nissan Australia to confirm local powertrains, equipment, pricing and seating options.
