While most carmakers are busy sculpting futuristic models for upcoming products, Skoda’s designers have been looking into the past for some stylish inspiration. The latest in Skoda’s “Icons get a makeover” series reimagines one of its rarest models, the 1000 MBX coupe.

Applying the lens of the Skoda Modern Solid design language, this concept envisions how the 1960s classic might look as a contemporary electric crossover, combining retro cues with modern proportions and functionality.

The 1000 MBX study is part of Skoda’s Icons Get a Makeover series, which invites the brand’s designers to reinterpret heritage models for the modern era. For the 1000 MBX, designers Antti Mikael Savio and David Stingl sought to capture the carefree yet refined spirit of the original car — not as a sports coupé, but as an elegant, versatile vehicle for active lifestyles.

Exterior designer Antti Mikael Savio said the goal was to preserve the elegance and charm that defined cars of the 1960s, while adapting those qualities to a more modern and versatile form.

A modern crossover with a retro soul

The 1000 MBX concept adopts coupe-like proportions atop a flat-floor electric platform. It features rear-hinged doors, a 2+2 seating layout, and a configurable interior designed for both urban and outdoor use.

Inside, the cabin replaces traditional chrome accents with minimalist surfaces and ambient lighting. A glass-covered oval display spans the dashboard, projecting digital graphics — a modern nod to the original car’s simple instruments.

Foldable rear seats provide room for larger items, such as bicycles, while adjustable air suspension allows the vehicle to be raised or lowered depending on the terrain.

“This car should encourage its crew to go exploring,” said interior designer David Stingl. “It’s not a weekend toy — it’s practical, adaptable, and ready for everyday adventures.”

From 1960s elegance to 21st-century confidence

The original Skoda 1000 MBX, derived from the 1000 MB sedan, debuted in 1966 as a distinctive model from the brand’s past. It featured frameless doors, no B-pillar, and a lightweight aluminium engine block, advanced for its time. With only 2,517 units ever built, it remains one of Skoda’s rarest production cars.

The reinterpretation keeps familiar details like the raised headlights, strong side crease, and C-pillar shape from the original coupe. Instead of a rear window, it uses a rear-view camera, which creates extra storage space and a neater look.

A tribute, not a teaser

As with other entries in the Icons Get a Makeover series, the 1000 MBX concept is a design study rather than a production preview. It highlights how Skoda’s Modern Solid language can reinterpret historical themes for the electric era.

Through this futuristic reinterpretation, Skoda illustrates how Skoda’s design language connects heritage and modernity.

Skoda also reimagined the Felicia Fun pickup a few months ago as part of the same design series — you can read more about that concept in our detailed article here.
