Tesla Australia has removed the Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) driver-assistance package from its line-up, as it shifts focus to its more advanced Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised system. The move streamlines Tesla’s offering but leaves buyers with fewer options between the standard Autopilot system and the pricier top-tier FSD.

What’s changed?

Tesla

The $5100 Enhanced Autopilot package is no longer available for order in Australia. Initially, it was thought the change only applied to newer vehicles equipped with Tesla’s latest Hardware 4 system — covering Model 3s built from September 2023 and Model Ys from late January 2024. However, Tesla has since confirmed the option has been withdrawn for all new customers, regardless of build date or hardware version.

For those still interested, the only way to obtain Enhanced Autopilot today is through a used Tesla in the second-hand market, or Tesla’s certified pre-owned program, where some vehicles are listed with the feature installed from the factory.

What Enhanced Autopilot offered

Tesla’s Enhanced Autopilot driver assist package sat between the standard Autopilot system and Full Self-Driving options. It included:

  • Assisted lane changes on motorways
  • Automatic parking (parallel and perpendicular)
  • Summon and Smart Summon, which allowed the car to move through parking spaces without a driver on board

While useful, these functions required driver input to initiate certain manoeuvres.

The table below highlights the main differences between Tesla’s discontinued Enhanced Autopilot and the new Full Self-Driving Supervised system:

Pricing and upgrade path

Customers who already own Enhanced Autopilot on Hardware 4 vehicles have the option to step up to Full Self-Driving:

  • $5000 outright upgrade, or
  • A forthcoming subscription model priced at $75 per month.

For new buyers, Full Self-Driving costs considerably more:

  • $10,100 upfront, or
  • $149 per month when the subscription model launches in Australia.

Tesla FSD Rollout details

The removal of Enhanced Autopilot coincides with the launch of FSD Supervised in Australia and New Zealand, the first right-hand-drive markets in the world to access the feature. Unlike EAP, which focuses on assisting with specific tasks, FSD Supervised is designed to handle door-to-door driving in almost all environments, though Tesla stresses drivers must remain attentive and keep their hands on the wheel.

At this stage, Tesla has not provided a timeline for when Hardware 3 vehicles, sold between 2019 and 2023, will gain access to FSD Supervised. For now, only Hardware 4-equipped cars can utilise the latest software.
