Tesla’s long-wheelbase, three-row, six-seat Model Y L has now been approved for sale in Europe and may launch in early 2026. This increases the chance that the larger Tesla Model Y L could also come to Australia because the approval rules here are similar to Europe’s.

The six-seat Tesla Model Y L is a longer version of the standard 5-seat Tesla Model Y. This car is already on sale in China, where it is offered with 3 rows of seats and space for 6 passengers.

Tesla has filed and received certification approval to sell the said model in the European Union. Australia’s vehicle approval rules are very similar to Europe’s, except for some extra local requirements. This increases the likelihood that Tesla could officially sell the Model Y L in Australia.

The Model Y L could be sold in Europe as soon as early 2026 (January–March). The new six-seat Model Y L is built at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, which is the same factory that already builds Australian-delivered Tesla Model Y vehicles.

The Model Y L dimensions make it a large SUV, up from the mid-size Model Y, and comparable to the Toyota Kluger in dimensions. The European documents do not confirm whether the Model Y L will be built in right-hand drive.

The battery capacity of the European version is higher than that of the already-on-sale Chinese-version. The difference may be due to how battery capacity is measured, not a different battery. This information is sourced from X (@eivissa).

Takeaways for the Australian buyers

The 6-seat Tesla Model Y L is now approved in Europe and already built in the same Shanghai factory, which indicates that Australia is now a real possibility for its launch, but not yet confirmed. Other 6-seat electric SUVs available in Australia include Kia EV9, Hyundai IONIQ 9, Zeekr 7X, and Volvo EX90, BMW iX, and Cadillac VISTIQ on the luxury side.
