Toyota’s dominance grows
Toyota’s monthly sales grew significantly compared to April 2025 where the brand did not cross the 20,000 units mark. It maintains a significant lead over Ford even though the American carmaker also witnessed a 19.5% uptick in month-on-month (MoM) sales.
Mazda’s significant growth

Mazda experienced a remarkable 30.9% increase in MoM sales, totaling 8,475 units but stayed third in the charts. This surge reflects the brand’s successful strategies in appealing to Australian consumers with its line of SUVs and aftersales packages.
Isuzu climbs the ranks

The top six remains the same from April 2025 despite each brand witnessing decent growth in monthly sales figures. But Isuzu Ute Australia’s MoM increase in sales from 3330 units to 4286 units places it just behind Mitsubishi and ahead of GWM and Nissan.
Mitsubishi’s big decline

The biggest drop-off in year-on-year sales among the top 10 was witnessed by Mitsubishi at a decline of over 25%, even though MoM numbers went up slightly. However, these numbers should improve once customer deliveries start for the updated Outlander SUV.
Tesla comeback with updated Model Y

The biggest improvement in sales for May 2025 has to be for EV-giant Tesla which witnessed a significant increase in demand as customer deliveries began for the 2025 Model Y. This placed Tesla among the top 10 brands for the month, ahead of MG, Nissan, and BYD.
Emerging Chinese brands
Chinese manufacturers like MG and GWM showed strong performances. MG’s 18.8% increase and Tesla’s significant sales highlight the growing acceptance of Chinese-made vehicles in Australia.
Conclusion
May 2025 showcased a dynamic automotive market in Australia, with traditional leaders like Toyota maintaining their positions and brands like Mazda and Tesla making significant gains. The evolving preferences of Australian consumers, coupled with the introduction of new models and technologies, continue to shape the landscape of car sales in the country.
