The legendary Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series is set to take an eight-month production break from September 2025, as Toyota prepares to roll out a cleaner, Euro 6-compliant version of the beloved outback basher.
But this isn’t a retirement — it’s a reboot.
The move comes in response to Australia’s new ADR 80/04 emissions regulations, which take effect from November 1, 2025. The rule targets all vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 3500kg, and the LandCruiser 70 Series, weighing in at 3510kg, just makes the cut.

Goodbye V8, Hello AdBlue
Toyota will retire the V8 from the local lineup and replace it with the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder — the same engine currently offered in Japan. This new variant will include AdBlue tech, a urea-based additive that reduces harmful tailpipe emissions.
It’s a significant change for the no-nonsense off-roader, but one that brings it in line with modern emission standards while preserving its rugged DNA.

No stock shortage, says Toyota
Despite the looming production stop, Toyota is reassuring fans there’s no need to panic. Speaking to CarExpert, the company confirmed it has ordered additional stock in advance to bridge the gap and avoid delivery delays.
“We’re confident we’ll meet ongoing demand across all 70 Series models during the break.”
Toyota doesn’t expect any blowouts in wait times, which is good news for those eyeing the rugged off-roader before the new rules kick in.

Other Toyota models will be affected as well
The Toyota LandCruiser 70 isn’t alone in this emissions update. Two other workhorses from Australia’s favourite car maker will also pause production for Down Under:
- HiAce Commuter: Stopping from June 2025 for 8 months
- Toyota Coaster: Pausing from August 2025 for 17 months

Competition vs emissions
Some rivals have already crossed the emissions finish line. Both the Ineos Grenadier and upcoming Ford Ranger Super Duty meet Euro 6 standards thanks to modern features like idle-stop systems and AdBlue tanks.
The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series is evolving, not disappearing. Expect the same legendary durability, now with a lower emissions footprint.
