Toyota Australia has announced a safety recall for certain Toyota Tundra vehicles due to a potential issue with the reverse lamp assemblies. This recall affects 1,532 vehicles that were produced between 30 June 2021 and 7 March 2025.

What is the major issue?

According to Toyota, the affected Tundra models are equipped with two reverse lamp assemblies, each containing a multi-layer vent patch designed to prevent water from entering the lights. Over time, and due to repeated temperature changes (also known as thermal cycling), this vent patch may begin to separate. If this happens, it could allow water to seep into the lamp assembly, which may lead to corrosion of internal components such as the circuit board, connectors, or wire harness.

If both reverse lamps stop working, it could limit the driver’s visibility while reversing, especially in low-light conditions, and make it harder for others to notice that the vehicle is backing up. This can potentially increase the risk of a collision.

Are there any warning signs?

No clear warnings or dashboard alerts indicate the issue before it happens. However, if moisture has already entered the reverse lamp assemblies, drivers may notice:

  • One or both reverse lamps not working
  • Reverse lights coming on when the vehicle isn’t in reverse
  • A check engine light on the dashboard
  • The “R” gear light staying on at all times
  • The rear-view camera activating while driving forward
  • License plate lamps not working correctly

What is Toyota doing?

To fix the issue, Toyota dealers will replace both reverse lamp assemblies free of charge. The repair is expected to take about two hours, though the actual time your vehicle is needed may vary depending on the dealer’s schedule.

Toyota Australia will be contacting all owners of affected vehicles directly. In the meantime, customers are encouraged to keep their contact details up to date with Toyota to ensure they receive all recall-related information.

What should owners do?

If you own a Toyota Tundra produced during the affected period, you are advised to:

  1. Contact your local or preferred Toyota dealership to check if your vehicle is involved.
  2. Have your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) ready. You can find it in your vehicle’s documentation or within the vehicle itself (refer to your Owner’s Manual for the exact location).
  3. Alternatively, call the Toyota Recall Campaign Helpline at 1800 987 366 (available Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 7:00 pm AEST).

Can I still drive my vehicle?

Yes, affected vehicles are still safe to drive. However, Toyota urges owners to arrange the recall repair as soon as possible to ensure full visibility and safety when reversing.

Does this affect any other Toyota models?

At this time, only certain Tundra models within the specific production and VIN ranges are included in the recall. No other Toyota vehicles are affected.
