With winter approaching, Volkswagen is turning up the heat on its flagship hot hatch. The Volkswagen Golf R now receives a dedicated performance upgrade in the form of the Warmenau package – named after the Wolfsburg village home to Volkswagen R’s development centre.

Available as a $6,500 option on the MY26 Volkswagen Golf R (excluding the Black Edition), the package brings both weight-saving and performance-enhancing enhancements, elevating the already potent hatch to new dynamic heights.

Titanium Akrapovič Exhaust returns

Following its success on the Volkswagen T-Roc R, the Akrapovič titanium exhaust makes a comeback to the Golf R. Known for its distinctive and aggressive sound, the system not only sharpens acoustics but also contributes to performance, shaving 7kg off the total weight.

With four prominent round tailpipes, the titanium exhaust lends a motorsport-inspired edge to the hatch’s rear styling.

Track-focussed wheels

A key highlight of the Warmenau package is a set of 19-inch forged alloy wheels, developed in-house by Volkswagen R. These wheels bring down unsprung mass significantly, each rim weighing just 8kg – a 20% reduction compared to standard alloys.

In addition to improved handling and ride quality, the wheel design features a bigger opening that promotes superior brake cooling, benefiting those who plan to take their Golf R to the track.

Genuine Carbon trim inside

Inside, the Warmenau package brings a touch of motorsport flair with genuine carbon fibre decorative trim across the dashboard and doors. The Golf R remains the only production Volkswagen to offer real carbon trim, further underlining its enthusiast-focused nature.

Australia’s appetite for performance

According to Arjun Nidigallu, Head of Product at Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles, Australia remains a significant market for Volkswagen R.

“Performance has always been a core strength of Golf R, and the lightweight, forged Warmenau wheels and Akrapovič titanium exhaust system elevate it to new heights, both from a visual and auditory perspective,” Nidigallu said.

The package, he added, offers Australian enthusiasts “the definitive version of the ultimate performance Golf.”
