As Volkswagen prepares to debut the close-to-production version of its latest all-electric offering, the company has confirmed it will carry a familiar name. The ID.2all electric hatchback will officially be called the Volkswagen ID.Polo.
This decision also lands in the 50th Anniversary of the Volkswagen Polo, and the ID.Polo will be sold alongside the combustion engine version (depending on the market). It is the first time Volkswagen has applied one of its combustion model monikers to its range of newly built EVs. They usually carry the unique ID-badge identity with a numerical naming system, like the ID.3, and all the way up to the ID.7 mid-size sedan, with the exception of the ID.Buzz van.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, Head of the Brand Group Core and member of the Group Board of Management: “Our model names are firmly anchored in people’s minds. They stand for a strong brand and embody characteristics such as quality, timeless design and technologies for all. That’s why we’re moving our well-known names into the future. The ID. Polo is just the beginning.”
VW ID.Polo – what we know

The newly named ID.Polo electric hatchback is set to make its world premiere at the upcoming IAA Mobility show. In its last known concept form, as the ID.2all, we already got to see a sleeker interpretation of the current Volkswagen design language, opting for a familiar look rather than an all-new design for the EV model.
The ID.2all concept debuted in 2023, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of design changes have been implemented in the last two years for this production-spec model. The camo-wrapped teasers suggest that much of the core styling has been carried forward, albeit with production-friendly shapes for the grille, LED lighting elements, and alloy wheels.
The marquee had promised Polo proportions with Golf-like cabin space with the ID.2all concept. Based on the teasers, however, the headroom in the production-spec ID.Polo could be slightly compromised. In terms of cabin design, expect a minimalistic layout with a smaller display for the instrumentation and a large screen for the central infotainment unit. As with the latest combustion engine VW models, tactile controls are expected to make a return.
Pricing and positioning

Another key headline for the ID.Polo will be its pricing. Originally advertised with a targeted starting price of less than €25,000 (A$44,549), the entry-level Volkswagen all-electric offering will compete against far more attractively priced rivals from Chinese brands when it reaches showrooms in 2026.
Battery, performance and range

Volkswagen is yet to share any technical specifications for the ID.Polo ahead of the official debut. Its 2023 concept, the ID.2all, featured a 166kW electric motor driving the rear wheels and a target range estimate of 450km. Production models are expected to offer multiple battery options and performance ratings, but will stick with the single-motor, FWD setup. Oh, there will be a performance version too!
Electric GTI confirmed

The ID.Polo announcement came alongside news that the follow-up all-electric launch will be the ID.Polo GTI. Also teased under camouflage, we can still make out the sportier design touches for the performance-oriented electric hatchback. Volkswagen is expected to keep the GTI front-wheel-drive only, with AWD reserved for the future Golf R EV.
Martin Sander: “We are bringing one of our strongest brands, the GTI, into the electric world. Also launching in 2026, the ID. GTI Concept2 model will go into production as the ID. Polo GTI1. It will offer outstanding dynamics and plenty of driving pleasure.”
More VW ID models in the works
The debut of the ID.Polo and ID.Polo GTI will be accompanied by fresh VW all-electric concepts – the ID. Cross. It will preview the company’s plans for one of the world’s most popular segments today – compact SUVs. It’s production version of the same name is set to be an electric counterpart to the already available Volkswagen T-Cross compact SUV.
