Volvo’s flagship sedan is back in Australia after seven years, this time as a fully electric model. The new 2026 Volvo ES90 starts at $88,880 before on-road costs, positioning it well below luxury EV sedan rivals like the Mercedes-Benz EQE ($135,200), BMW i5 ($155,900), and Genesis Electrified G80 ($155,000).

2026 Volvo ES90 Australia prices
The Volvo ES90 arrives in two single-motor trims for Australia, both offering great value compared to European rivals.
Variants | Price (before on-road) |
ES90 Plus | $88,880 |
ES90 Ultra | $107,990 |

Sedan, SUV… or both?
Volvo calls the ES90 a “genre-busting” liftback, blending the sleekness of a sedan with the raised ride height and roomy interior more typical of an SUV. At 5m long and 1942mm wide, it’s nearly the same size as the BMW i5, but with a longer 3102mm wheelbase for extra cabin space.
It’s also the most aerodynamic Volvo ever, with a 0.25Cd drag coefficient. Boot space is 424L, expanding to 733L with the seats down, plus a handy 22L frunk perfect for stashing charging cables.

Battery, range and performance
Under the skin, both grades share the same powertrain setup. While performance figures won’t trouble sports sedans, the ES90 has more than enough for effortless luxury cruising.
Specification | Volvo ES90 Plus / Ultra (AU spec) |
Powertrain | 245kW / 480Nm |

What Australia misses out on
For now, Volvo Australia is keeping things simple with just the attractively-priced single-motor lineup. However, overseas buyers have access to more powerful dual-motor versions, offering an extra punch and range.
Overseas options | Specification |
Dual-motor AWD | Up to 500kW power |
Long-range versions | Up to ~700km WLTP range |

Tech and safety

The ES90 debuts Volvo’s new Superset tech stack, a unified set of hardware and software that will underpin all upcoming EVs from the brand. Safety is backed by serious hardware: one LiDAR, five radars, seven cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, plus features like rear occupant detection, safe exit assist, and 3D surround-view cameras.
Back in the fight
When the last S90 sedan was on sale here in 2018, it kicked off at $81,400 with petrol power. Adjusted for today, that’s around $100K, making this new electric ES90 sharper value than expected.
With the S60 and V60 Cross Country axed, the ES90 now stands as Volvo’s only passenger car in Australia, joining the EX30, EX40 and EX90 SUVs in the brand’s growing EV line-up. Orders are open now, with first deliveries due in early 2026.
