The Xpeng L05 has been caught on camera ahead of its global launch, offering Australians a first look at the upcoming electric SUV due to launch Down Under in 2027. The new model is expected to enter a highly competitive market, and will directly rival the likes of the Tesla Model Y and Zeekr 7X.
While Xpeng has officially confirmed the L05’s arrival in Australia, release dates, pricing, and specifications for the local market have yet to be released. The latest photographs of the Xpeng L05 have emerged from Chinese automotive media Autohome, with the images set to offer the first comprehensive view of the L05 beyond the renderings and images leaked by Chinese government officials.

What do we know about the Xpeng L05?
As mentioned above, the L05 will form part of the Xpeng Mona series, and will be the third car in the Xpeng model range targeting younger buyers. Available in both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) powertrain variants, the Xpeng L05 will enter the Australian market as a premium competitor to the likes of the Tesla Model Y and Zeekr 7X. Features on the L05 in the images include 20-inch alloy wheels, yellow brake calipers and recessed door handles, privacy glass, and cameras positioned at the front guards.
Xpeng has yet to confirm which specification levels of the L05 will arrive in Australia. The Xpeng L05 measures 4870mm from bumper to bumper, 1930mm wide, and 1636mm tall, with a 2940mm wheelbase. Compared to the Xpeng G6, the L05 is 112mm longer and 10mm wider, but sits 14mm lower, with a wheelbase that is 50mm longer than the rival G6 model.
Xpeng L05 range and powertrain
The L05 is expected to share its powertrain technology with the smaller Xpeng L03, although the larger SUV will receive a bigger battery in its EV version. The L05 EV is expected to use a 71.1kWh battery, providing up to 660km of claimed CLTC range.
The CLTC testing standard is generally more optimistic than Australia’s WLTP testing cycle, so the Australian-rated range is likely to be lower. The smaller L03 EV uses a rear-mounted electric motor producing 183kW and 280Nm, with 56kWh and 69kWh battery options. It is not yet confirmed whether the L05 will use exactly the same motor output in Australia.
The range-extender version combines a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 37.2kWh battery. In the L03, this setup provides between 315km and 325km of electric driving range and a claimed total range of up to 1380km under CLTC testing. Australian specifications for the L05 EREV are yet to be confirmed.
What will the Xpeng L05 interior look like?
Images of the cabin show a minimalist dashboard dominated by a large central touchscreen. The L05 also features a floating centre console, two-spoke steering wheel and column-mounted gear selector.
The interior follows the increasingly common approach among Chinese EV makers of keeping physical controls to a minimum while placing many functions on the central display. More detailed Australian equipment specifications are expected closer to the local launch.
When will the Xpeng L05 arrive in Australia?
The Xpeng L05 is confirmed to launch in Australia in early 2027, adding another model to the brand’s rapidly expanding local range. Xpeng took control of its Australian and New Zealand operations earlier this year and is planning a significant expansion of its model line-up.
The smaller L03 is scheduled to arrive before the L05, with an Australian launch planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. Xpeng is also preparing to introduce the X9 seven-seat electric people mover, while an updated G6 is expected to strengthen the brand’s existing SUV offering. Further models, including the larger G9L and GX SUVs, are also planned for the Australian market.
Xpeng L05 could add another option for Australian EV buyers
The L05 will enter one of Australia’s most competitive new-car segments, with buyers now having a growing number of electric SUVs to choose from. Its combination of a relatively large battery, long claimed CLTC range and the option of range-extender technology could give Xpeng another way to appeal to Australian buyers who are not ready to rely entirely on a battery-electric vehicle.
However, the important details for Australia are still to come. Pricing, local specifications, WLTP range figures and final variant grades will determine how competitive the L05 is against the Tesla Model Y, Zeekr 7X and other electric SUVs. Xpeng is expected to reveal more information about the L05 ahead of its Australian arrival in 2027.
