Key highlights:
- Tank 500 diesel starts at $65,990 drive-away with a temporary $2000 discount
- New diesel delivers upgraded 3500kg towing capacity and 7.1L/100km
- First customer deliveries are due from mid-September 2026
The GWM Tank 500 diesel is now available to order in Australia, with the first customer deliveries due from mid-September 2026. The new diesel powertrain replaces the locally offered hybrid (HEV) model and brings a lower entry price, better fuel economy and a 3500kg towing capacity to GWM’s large seven-seat off-road SUV.
The Australian 2026 Tank 500 lineup now includes the diesel and slightly updated PHEV model only.
The Tank 500 remains a body-on-frame 4×4 with a premium, feature-heavy cabin and targets established family 4x4s such as the Toyota LandCruiser Prado, Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X. The Chinese carmaker also plans to launch a more heavily updated Ultra PHEV model than the tuned 2026 PHEV variant with V2L addition locally.
Diesel replaces the HEV powertrain
The new 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel marks the first time GWM has offered a diesel-powered Tank 500 in Australia, and it’s larger than the 2.4-litre diesel engine available in other markets. The diesel replaces the hybrid (HEV) in local showrooms, although the brand continues to advertise remaining Tank 500 hybrid stock.
The diesel produces 170kW and 620Nm, down from the hybrid’s 255kW and 648Nm and also uses less fuel, with a claimed 7.1L/100km compared with 8.5L/100km for the hybrid.

The diesel Tank 500 increases towing capacity by 500kg and retains the seven-seat capacity.
Every Tank 500 uses four-wheel drive and features locking front, centre and rear differentials. The diesel SUV uses a part-time 4×4 system, while the PHEV uses a torque-on-demand full-time system. The diesel variants also avoid the need for AdBlue.
The mildly updated Ultra PHEV SUV adds an AT-1 localised chassis tune and an upgraded 220V V2L boot outlet.
