The GWM Cannon Alpha is getting a major update in Australia, with the flagship ute gaining a new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 170kW and 620Nm – an increase of 35kW and 140Nm over the outgoing 2.4-litre diesel.

It also gives the GWM Cannon Alpha more torque than the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 used in the Ford Ranger and Everest, which produces 600Nm. Ford’s V6 retains a power advantage, however, with 184kW.

The new Cannon Alpha 3.0L is available to pre-order now, with Australian deliveries expected to begin from mid-September 2026. GWM says it has already received more than 1000 expressions of interest across the new Cannon Alpha and related Tank 500, which is also gaining the new diesel engine.

The new 3.0-litre diesel GWM Cannon Alpha is available in two grades:

VariantPrice
Cannon Alpha 3.0L Lux$58,990 drive-away
Cannon Alpha 3.0L Vanta$63,990 drive-away

GWM is also offering buyers a choice of a $2000 drive-away cash bonus or $2000 fuel card on vehicles purchased before October 30, 2026. That makes the new model more expensive than the outgoing 2.4-litre diesel Cannon Alpha, which was priced from $52,990 drive-away in Lux specification.

GWM is nevertheless positioning the Cannon Alpha as a value-focused alternative to established diesel utes, with the new Lux priced close to the entry-level Ford Ranger XL diesel and the flagship Vanta sitting below a Ranger XLT with Ford’s 3.0-litre V6 diesel.

New 3.0-litre diesel delivers 620Nm

2026 GWM Cannon Alpha

The biggest change is under the bonnet. The new four-cylinder turbo-diesel produces:

SpecificationGWM Cannon Alpha 3.0L
Power170kW
Torque620Nm
Peak torque1400–2400rpm
TransmissionNine-speed automatic
DrivePart-time 4WD
Low rangeYes
Differential locksFront, centre and rear
Braked towing capacity3500kg

The 620Nm figure is particularly notable because it exceeds the 600Nm produced by Ford’s 3.0-litre diesel V6. The Ranger’s V6 remains more powerful, producing 184kW, but the Cannon Alpha now claims the higher torque figure despite using a four-cylinder engine.

GWM has also fitted a dedicated towing drive mode and an integrated trailer brake controller, with the Australian engineering program placing particular emphasis on towing performance.

More power but lower fuel consumption

2026 GWM Cannon Alpha

Despite the increase in engine capacity and performance, the new Cannon Alpha is also claimed to be more efficient. Fuel consumption falls from 8.9L/100km to 7.3L/100km, while the engine does not require AdBlue. GWM says the improvements come from changes across the engine, including:

  • Shorter intake piping to reduce turbo lag
  • Bosch common-rail fuel injection
  • Revised airflow and fuel delivery
  • Electronically controlled cooling fan
  • Optimised thermal management

The company says these changes were designed to improve throttle response, efficiency and long-term durability rather than simply increasing engine capacity.

Higher payload for the Cannon Alpha

2026 GWM Cannon Alpha

The new diesel also brings a significant improvement in carrying capacity. The GWM Cannon Alpha 3.0L has:

SpecificationGWM Cannon Alpha 3.0L
Kerb weight2550kg
GVM3495kg
Payload945kg
Braked towing capacity3500kg
Downball weight350kg

The 945kg payload is considerably higher than the 760-821kg range of the outgoing diesel Cannon Alpha.

Towing capacity remains unchanged at 3500kg, but GWM says the new model has received additional towing integration, including the trailer brake controller, towing drive mode and transmission calibration for heavy loads. The ute also retains its low-range four-wheel-drive system and locking differentials for off-road driving.

Cannon Alpha undergoes Australian testing

GWM says the new diesel powertrain has undergone more than six months of Australian engineering and validation. The program has been led by GWM Australia’s Lead Product Dynamics and Integration Manager Rob Trubiani, with Australian and Chinese engineering teams working on the calibration and durability of the new powertrain.

Development vehicles accumulated more than 35,000km in less than two months, with testing conducted in areas including:

  • Flinders Ranges
  • Victoria’s High Country
  • Big Desert

The testing covered engine and transmission calibration, ride and handling, towing performance and software. GWM says the Australian program is intended to ensure the new diesel is better suited to the conditions and demands of local buyers.

New 14.6-inch touchscreen and Coffee OS

The GWM Cannon Alpha has also received a significant technology upgrade. The previous 12.3-inch touchscreen has been replaced by a 14.6-inch 2K display running GWM’s new Coffee OS operating system. The new system includes:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay
  • Wireless Android Auto
  • 1920×1080 resolution
  • Over-the-air software updates
  • Connected-car functionality through the GWM App

Coffee OS is designed to provide access to vehicle functions, navigation, entertainment and connectivity, while OTA updates allow GWM to introduce software improvements without requiring a dealership visit. The larger central screen is joined by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

The ute also gets seven airbags, reversing camera, rear parking sensors and an integrated trailer brake controller.

GWM is sticking with diesel

2026 GWM Cannon Alpha

The new Cannon Alpha arrives as more manufacturers shift their focus towards hybrid and electric powertrains, but GWM is continuing to invest in diesel technology for the Australian market.

GWM Australia chief operating officer John Kett said the company believes Australian buyers should have a choice of powertrains, particularly in segments where diesel remains popular. The Cannon Alpha is also available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, giving buyers the choice between diesel and electrification.

The new 3.0-litre diesel therefore isn’t simply a larger engine replacing the outgoing 2.4-litre unit. GWM has used the update to improve several areas that matter to Australian ute buyers, including performance, with 170kW and 620Nm, fuel economy at 7.3L/100km, a higher 945kg payload and 3500kg towing capacity. It also gains new towing technology, a larger 14.6-inch infotainment screen and extensive Australian engineering and validation.

The 2026 GWM Cannon Alpha 3.0L is now available to pre-order, with the first Australian deliveries expected from mid-September 2026.
