Mercedes-Benz is preparing to launch the all-new 2026 CLA in Australia, introducing hybrid and fully electric variants for the first time. The third-generation CLA is a ground-up reinvention, shifting from ICE to an EV-first model built on the new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA).
It blends hybrid efficiency, cutting-edge AI technology and long-range EV capability into one sharply styled package. The new CLA line-up will soon launch locally with five variants spanning two distinct powertrain families: three hybrids and two fully electric models. The luxury brand is clearly positioning it to cover every base.
The new CLA introduces several unique features for the segment, but it could rival the Tesla Model 3, BMW i4, BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, and Polestar 2 in Australia.

The rear-wheel-drive layout is uncommon in the compact luxury EV segment and helps deliver a more engaging driving experience. EV models run on a 200kW rear-mounted electric motor derived from the ultra-efficient Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX concept, achieving battery-to-wheel efficiency of up to 93%.
Mercedes-Benz has also fitted a clever two-speed transmission on the rear axle. The first gear boosts low-speed acceleration and responsiveness. The second gear improves efficiency and long-distance cruising.
The braking system has also been redesigned to maximise energy recovery, with recuperation capability of up to 200kW.
The 800-volt electrical architecture also enables faster DC charging. Both electric CLA variants are compatible with both 800V and 400V chargers in Australia, supporting up to 320kW of fast DC charging.
The CLA 350 4MATIC AWD electric adds an 80kW front motor with an intelligent disconnect system that can decouple the front motor under low load conditions. Mercedes says this setup can reduce front axle energy losses by up to 90%, helping maximise driving range.

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA hybrid variants are capable of driving on electric power alone, which is a rare feature for a mild-hybrid, thanks to a highly integrated powertrain built into the new MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform.
Unlike typical mild hybrids, where the electric motor only assists the engine, the MY26 CLA uses an electrified eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (8F-eDCT) that integrates a 20 kW electric motor.
The new petrol engine is paired with a lithium-ion 48V battery with up to 1.3kWh of energy storage and up to 25kW of energy recuperation. The electric motor can assist across the full rev range, improving low-speed responsiveness and acceleration.

The new CLA line-up rides on a newly developed chassis focused on balancing comfort and agility. It rides on a newly developed 3-link front axle with forged aluminium components and a sophisticated multi-link rear axle typically seen in larger Mercedes-Benz models.
Mercedes says the setup delivers a sharper steering response, improved rigidity, better ride comfort, and enhanced handling balance. A steel-sprung comfort suspension comes standard across the range.
Exterior: A sleeker CLA with smarter details
The third-generation CLA introduces a cleaner, more aerodynamic design focused heavily on efficiency and modern luxury.
The new-generation CLA is roughly 4 cm longer and has a 6 cm longer wheelbase than the outgoing model, providing more rear legroom and headroom. The new CLA sedan, interestingly, also includes a frunk (front trunk).
Hybrid variants retain a traditional Mercedes-Benz grille featuring the familiar chrome star pattern and LED light guide, while the electric models go all-in on futuristic styling with a fully illuminated grille containing 142 animated LED star elements that light up as you approach the car.
Aerodynamics have played a huge role in the redesign, too. The smooth-flowing front end, heavily sculpted surfaces and streamlined body help the CLA achieve an ultra-slippery drag coefficient of just 0.21Cd, which is an impressive figure that directly benefits both fuel economy and EV range.
