The Black Edition arrives just eight months after the MGU9 made its Australian debut. MG says the new variant was developed in response to customer demand for a ute with a more premium appearance while retaining the capability and practicality expected from a modern dual-cab.

Blacked-out styling inside and out

MG MGU9 Black Edition

The biggest visual change is the exclusive black exterior treatment. The MGU9 Black Edition features a blacked-out grille, MG badges, wheel caps and side trim, along with a stamped tailgate that gives the ute a more distinctive appearance.

Inside, MG has continued the dark theme with a black headliner and black pillars, while retaining the premium finishes and practical layout found in the standard MGU9. The cabin also includes heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and the brand’s infotainment system.

Proven diesel powertrain continues

Under the bonnet, the Black Edition retains the familiar 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. It also features MG’s three-lock system to improve traction in challenging off-road conditions.

The ute continues to offer a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity, an 18-inch all-terrain alloy wheel package and a spacious cargo tub.

A notable addition is Towing Cruise Control (TCC), which has been introduced following customer feedback. The system is designed to improve convenience and confidence when towing trailers, boats and caravans.

Focus on comfort and practicality

MG MGU9 Black Edition

The MGU9 Black Edition continues to use MG’s locally developed multi-link independent rear suspension, which is designed to deliver improved ride comfort compared with traditional leaf-spring rear suspension setups.

Inside, the Black Edition features a dark-themed cabin with an exclusive black headliner and matching pillars. Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a premium infotainment system further enhance comfort, giving the ute a more upmarket feel.

Practicality is a key focus, with the powered tailgate lowering at the press of a button to reveal an integrated step for easier access to the tub. When lowered, the tailgate can also double as a seating area with built-in cup holders for camping trips and outdoor activities.

MG says the combination of premium cabin features, practical innovations and a 3.5-tonne towing capacity is designed to appeal to Australian buyers looking for a ute that can comfortably handle work duties during the week and family or recreational use on weekends.

MG says Australian ute buyers are changing

MG MGU9 Black Edition

MG Motor Australia Marketing Director Dimitri Andreatidis said customer expectations in the ute segment are evolving beyond outright capability.

“Since launching the MGU9, we’ve seen strong interest from Australians looking for a ute with a more distinctive look and premium feel. The Black Edition was developed in response to that demand, bringing together the capability customers expect with exclusive styling that gives the vehicle even greater presence on the road.”

He added that buyers increasingly expect comfort, technology and safety alongside traditional ute capabilities, with vehicles needing to perform equally well on worksites, family road trips and everyday suburban driving.

MG also confirmed that the upcoming MGU9 EV, first shown at the Melbourne Motor Show earlier this year, will further expand its Australian ute lineup with an electric alternative.
