MG Motor Australia has updated its 2026 MG S5 EV lineup with more power and range after strong demand for its higher-specification models. The company has discontinued the entry-level Excite 49 and Excite 62 variants.

More than 80% of customer orders have been for the Essence variants since the electric SUV launched locally in 2025. The MG S5 EV was introduced to replace the older ZS EV with a larger and more advanced electric SUV.

Only the top-grade Essence 62 gets the power and range boost, and at the same drive-away price of $47,990.

2026 MG S5 EV pricing and release date

The previous entry-level MG S5 Excite 49 and Excite 62 grades have been axed because the premium Essence trims accounted for roughly 80% of consumer orders. This update has increased the baseline entry price for the lineup by $2,500. The updated S5 EV range is on sale now.

The flagship variant, Essence 62, now delivers significantly stronger performance while retaining its existing drive-away price. Meanwhile, the Essence 49 continues unchanged

MG says the upgraded electric motor in the flagship grade uses advanced motor technology to deliver higher power density and improved efficiency.

The MG S5 EV continues to be built on the same platform as the MG4 EV. It uses the MG’s Modular Scalable Platform and a battery pack measuring just 110mm high, which maximises cabin space. The S5 also carries a five-star ANCAP safety rating from its May 2025 testing.

Customer demand inspired the changes

MG says Australian EV buyers are becoming more selective as the market matures. They are not just switching to EVs but placing greater importance on everyday driving performance, driving range, and in-vehicle technology. The Essence 62 alone accounted for 58% of all MG S5 EV sales.

Bottom line

MG has simplified the 2026 MG S5 EV lineup by removing the entry-level Excite variants after most Australian buyers chose the higher-specification Essence models.

Essence 62 has been upgraded, which now produces 150kW and 350Nm, accelerates from 0–100km/h in 7.0 seconds, and offers up to 450km of WLTP driving range at the same price.

The range continues to offer rear-wheel-drive dynamics, a spacious interior and key features such as wireless Apple CarPlay and a hands-free power tailgate.
