Tesla has introduced a new version of its best-selling SUV, the Model Y L, in China. The updated model stretches the body of the familiar Model Y to accommodate a third row of seats, turning it into a six-seater. For now, though, there’s no confirmation on whether it will make its way to Australia.

What’s new in the Tesla Model Y L?

The Tesla Model Y L adds length and height compared to the standard five-seat version, measuring 4,976 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,668 mm in height. That’s 179mm longer and 44mm taller, with a wheelbase extended by 150mm. The changes give it space for a third row, while the second row swaps the usual bench for heated and ventilated captain’s chairs with power-folding armrests.

At the back, Tesla has fitted longer doors, a stretched roofline, and a black rear spoiler. Buyers also get the option of a new Starlight Gold exterior colour and unique 19-inch ‘rotating mecha’ alloy wheels. Inside, the updates include:

  • Heated third-row seating
  • Extra air vents for passengers in rows two and three
  • Enlarged 16-inch infotainment screen (up from 15.4 inches)
  • New sports-style front seats from the Model 3 Performance
  • An upgraded 18-speaker sound system with subwoofer

Practicality is also improved. Both rear rows fold flat, expanding cargo space to 2,539 litres, a 17% increase from the 2,138 litres offered in the standard model.

Performance and range

Under the skin, the Tesla Model Y L features dual motors producing 142kW at the front and 198kW at the rear, which enables a 0–100km/h time of 4.5 seconds, slightly slower than the five-seater.

Despite being heavier at 2088kg, it maintains an impressive 751km of claimed range under China’s lenient CLTC testing, thanks to aerodynamic tweaks, a rear spoiler, and new wheels. Power comes from the same 82kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack used in the Long Range AWD.

Tesla says the more extended version also benefits from upgraded suspension with adaptive damping, designed to improve ride comfort, grip, and stability.

Market position

The Model Y L is currently sold only in China, priced from 339,000 yuan (approximately $72,700), which is around eight per cent more than the standard Model Y Long Range AWD. If introduced to Australia with the same premium, pricing could start near $74,500 plus on-road costs.

For Australian buyers, the Model Y L could fill the gap left by the larger Tesla Model X, which was discontinued locally in 2020 when Tesla ceased production of it in right-hand drive.

What does it mean for Australia?

While the six-seat Tesla Model Y L will be a robust addition to Tesla’s lineup, particularly for families, its arrival in Australia remains uncertain. For now, it’s a China-only offering, but with demand for larger EVs growing, it could eventually find its way into local showrooms.

Tesla has revealed the Model Y L, a long-wheelbase, six-seat version of its best-selling SUV. The new model has gone on sale in China but is yet to be confirmed for other markets, including Australia.
