Key highlights:
- 2027 BMW i3 starts at $96,900 before on-road costs

- New i3 becomes BMW’s first electric 3 Series
BMW has confirmed Australian pricing for its all-new 2027 BMW i3, with the electric mid-size sedan arriving in two grades from the first quarter of 2027. The new i3 joins an updated 3 Series range that now spans four variants, while BMW also uses the launch to introduce a new naming approach for its petrol models.
The Australian i3 range starts with the i3 40 xDrive at $96,900 before on-road costs, and the higher-spec i3 50 xDrive costs $112,900 before on-road costs. This premium electric sedan was fully revealed back in March 2026 at its world premiere.
Two BMW i3 electric sedan variants for Australia

The BMW i3 electric sedan is built on the company’s brand-new 800-volt Neue Klasse EV architecture with new flat-cell batteries, unlike its petrol siblings in the eighth-generation 3 Series.
The i3 40 xDrive uses an 82.8kWh battery and two electric motors, and the i3 50 xDrive steps up to a much larger 108.7kWh battery pack. The higher-spec variant also brings more power and range to the i3 sedan.
| Specification | BMW i3 40 xDrive | BMW i3 50 xDrive |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | 82.8kWh | 108.7kWh |
| Power output | 275kW | 345kW |
| Torque output | 520Nm | 645Nm |
| Drive type | Dual-motor AWD | Dual-motor AWD |
| 0-100km/h | 5.4s | 4.7s |
| Top speed | 200km/h | 200km/h |
| EV range (WLTP) | 566km to 710km | 912km |
| DC fast charging | 300kW | 400kW |
| AC charging | 22kW | 22kW |
Both i3 electric sedan variants share the same top speed of 200km/h while the mild-hybrid petrol flagship, the BMW M350 xDrive, reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
Standard equipment

Despite being on different platforms, the i3 EV and its petrol siblings share a nearly identical exterior appearance inspired by BMW’s bold Neue Klasse design language, featuring distinct kidney grilles that blend into the headlights. Both i3 variants come with a substantial list of standard equipment:
- BMW Iconic Glow exterior package
- M Sport package
- Adaptive M suspension
- M Sport brakes in metallic dark blue
- 19-inch M aerodynamic wheels
- Pillar-to-pillar BMW Panoramic Vision display below the windscreen
- 3D head-up display
- Heated multifunction front seats
- Heated rear seats
- Heated sports steering wheel
- Panoramic sunroof with “climate comfort glazing”
Buyers can choose from seven interior colour combinations, with many available at no additional cost depending on the selected front seats.

BMW offers the M Sport Pro package for an additional $4200, which adds M Sport brakes in red or blue, black mirror caps, and a black rear spoiler.
Inside, the package brings an M steering wheel, M-coloured seat belts and front M Sport seats, and the multifunction front seats remain available as an option.
Alpine White paint comes standard, but buyers can choose from nine additional metallic paint finishes for $2000, while Frozen Space Silver Metallic is also available for $2000.

The i3 name returns to the 3 Series

The new i3 marks a major change for BMW’s naming system. After decades of using the ‘i’ in its petrol-engine badges to indicate fuel-injection technology, BMW later moved the letter to the front of its model names to identify electric vehicles. The ‘e’ became the designation for plug-in hybrids.
The original BMW i3 stood apart as its own model rather than belonging to the 3 Series family, but that changes with the new generation.
The 2027 i3 becomes the name of the first electric 3 Series, built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, and BMW has also dropped the ‘i’ from the badges of its 3 Series petrol variants as part of the revised nomenclature.
All-new BMW i3 EV pricing for Australia
Alongside the two electric i3s, BMW has reduced the updated 3 Series range to four variants, so that gives Australian buyers two petrol models alongside the two new electric i3 grades.
| 2027 3 Series variant | Pricing before on-road costs |
|---|---|
| BMW 320 | $83,900 |
| BMW M350 xDrive | $128,900 |
| BMW i3 40 xDrive EV | $96,900 |
| BMW i3 50 xDrive EV | $112,900 |
