2027 BYD Atto 2 DM-i price: Australia’s cheapest PHEV

BYD has priced the new powertrain addition to the 2027 Atto 2 lineup, making it Australia’s cheapest plug-in hybrid just nine days after making the Atto 1 the country’s cheapest EV.

The 2027 BYD Atto 2 DM-i Essential costs $24,990 before on-road costs, undercutting BYD’s own Sealion 5 Essential by $9000 and taking the title of Australia’s cheapest PHEV.

The new lineup is available to order locally, and deliveries are confirmed to begin in October 2026. The new Atto 2 PHEV model rivals slightly larger SUVs like the Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid, BYD Sealion 5, and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV.

Same dimensions across the range

The Atto 2’s exterior dimensions remain unchanged from the outgoing EV lineup, and the DM-i versions share the same footprint as the Atto 2 EV.

Two batteries, two electric ranges

The Atto 2 DM-i Essential trim uses a small 7.85kWh BYD Blade lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery and the Premium gets a much larger 18.03kWh Blade battery. Both versions use the same petrol engine and electric motor.

Despite sharing the same 145kW/300Nm electric motor, the two grades have different combined power outputs.

Every 2027 BYD Atto 2 DM-i gets three powertrain modes:

• EV Pure Electric uses electric power alone
• HEV Series runs the petrol engine as a generator to charge the battery
• HEV Parallel combines petrol and electric power to drive the wheels together

Both variants support AC charging at up to 3.3kW and neither supports DC fast charging. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality is available only on the Premium.

The Essential trim uses cloth upholstery instead of the synthetic leather fitted to the Atto 2 EV Essential and also gets:

Atto 2 takes PHEV price crown

The $24,990 Atto 2 DM-i Essential replaces the $33,990 BYD Sealion 5 Essential as Australia’s cheapest plug-in hybrid, which the Sealion 5 has held since its Australian launch in December 2025.

BYD now occupies the top three positions among the country’s most affordable PHEVs, with the $34,990 Seal 6 Essential sitting just behind the Sealion 5.

The cheapest non-BYD PHEV is currently the Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid, which costs $34,990 drive-away until September 30, 2026.

The Atto 2 DM-i launch comes just nine days after BYD made the Atto 1 Australia’s cheapest new car, and it also marked the first time an EV has held that distinction.

However, the Atto 1’s low drive-away price remains available only until December 15, 2026.
