Key highlights:

  • Navara Pro PHEV arrives in Australia in 2027
  • Australian version gets a 2.0-litre turbocharged PHEV
  • Nissan targets 1000kg payload and 3500kg towing

The Nissan Navara Pro PHEV is confirmed to arrive in Australia in 2027 as Nissan’s first electrified ute and first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sold locally. Despite sharing the Navara name with Nissan’s existing diesel ute, the Pro PHEV is an entirely different vehicle.

It has been co-developed with Nissan’s long-term Chinese partner, Dongfeng, with Australian and New Zealand input playing a major role in shaping the Oceania version.

While the major mechanical specs are out, Nissan is keeping a few details under wraps until closer to the official local launch in 2027, such as the battery capacity, EV range, and grade-by-grade features.

Bigger engine chosen for Australia

The Oceania-spec Navara Pro PHEV will use a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a high-output electric motor integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission. Nissan evaluated both 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol PHEV systems before selecting the larger engine.

The system currently produces a preliminary 300kW and 800Nm, although Nissan says both figures remain subject to final homologation.

Nissan says it will provide low-range crawling capability for off-road driving while allowing low-rpm cruising at highway speeds. Four drive modes will be available: Eco, Standard, Sport, and Slippery.

There will also be seven terrain modes: Standard, Deep Snow, Mud, Sand, Rock, Wading, and Expert.

It will also offer vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, but Nissan has not yet confirmed the battery capacity or electric-only driving range.

Nissan is targeting a payload of up to 1000kg and 3500kg braked towing capacity, and both figures remain subject to final homologation. If Nissan achieves those targets, the Pro PHEV will offer towing and payload credentials similar to conventional diesel dual-cab utes such as the Navara, Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger.

It would also exceed the payload of most current PHEV ute rivals:

Differential locks and suspension still being tested

Nissan is still finalising some of the Navara Pro PHEV’s hardware. The company has evaluated front, rear and combined mechanical differential-lock configurations during the local development program, along with different suspension and tyre combinations.

It has also tested both leaf-spring and multi-link coil-spring rear suspension for the Oceania market. The final rear suspension setup and number of differential locks for Australia will be confirmed closer to the start of sales.

A more premium Navara

The Navara Pro PHEV will use a five-seat dual-cab ute body, and depending on grade, available equipment will include:

  • Large central touchscreen
  • Digital instrument cluster
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Heated front seats
  • Ventilated front seats

Nissan says it has also added extensive soundproofing and more premium materials, positioning the Pro PHEV above a conventional work ute.

10-year, 300,000km warranty

Nissan will back the Navara Pro PHEV with a 10-year, 300,000km warranty when it is serviced through authorised Nissan dealers, and the additional warranty period remains subject to Nissan’s service-activation conditions.

For now, there are still some important gaps in the Australian specification.

Final equipment, pricing, battery capacity, electric-only range and other Australian specifications will be announced closer to the Navara Pro PHEV’s 2027 launch.
