The 2027 smart #2 has been officially teased for the first time, with the brand using a global street art campaign that includes Melbourne to preview its upcoming all-electric city car ahead of its world premiere later this year.
Rather than revealing the vehicle through a traditional launch event, smart has commissioned large-scale murals across six major cities; Melbourne, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Berlin and Paris; to offer the first public glimpse of the reborn two-seater EV.
The new model is scheduled to make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026.
Melbourne plays a key role in smart #2 global reveal

Australia has become one of the first countries to showcase the upcoming smart #2, with a bespoke mural unveiled in Melbourne, a city recognised globally for its street art culture.
Created by Australian contemporary artist Georgia Laurie, the mural integrates the silhouette and design elements of the upcoming EV into a colourful public artwork, reflecting smart’s “Change of Perspectives” campaign.
According to the company, the campaign is designed to blur the line between automotive design and urban art while generating interest ahead of the model’s official unveiling.
smart confirms return of its iconic two-seater

The smart #2 marks the return of the brand’s signature two-seat city car, a formula that helped establish smart as a specialist in compact urban mobility.
While detailed specifications remain under wraps, smart says the new EV combines its traditional ultra-compact footprint with improved capability, premium features and electric power for modern city driving.
The company also confirmed the vehicle has been designed by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team.
According to smart, the new model continues the brand’s three core design principles:
- Designed with Love
- No Compromise on Safety
- Amazing Drives
The exterior is expected to retain the compact proportions of the previously shown Concept #2, while introducing smoother body surfaces and contemporary styling details.
Global mural campaign spans six cities
The teaser campaign extends well beyond Australia.
In Shanghai, artist Zhu Bin combines traditional Chinese influences with contemporary visual elements.
Hong Kong features artwork by street art collective Parents Parents, focusing on the benefits of compact urban mobility in one of the world’s most densely populated cities.
In Buenos Aires, renowned mural artist Martín Ron has created a large-scale artwork inspired by the city’s culture and architecture.
The campaign will then move to Berlin, where the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team will create artwork at the historic East Side Gallery, before concluding in Paris with French street artist Brusk ahead of the vehicle’s global debut.
Paris Motor Show debut confirmed

Smart has confirmed the all-electric smart #2 will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026.
The company is yet to reveal technical specifications, battery sizes, driving range, charging capabilities or performance figures. Those details are expected to be announced during the official reveal.
The smart #2 will become the latest addition to the brand’s growing electric vehicle portfolio and represents the return of the iconic two-seat city car for the EV era.
Will the smart #2 come to Australia?
Smart has not confirmed Australian launch plans for the smart #2.
However, the inclusion of Melbourne in the global teaser campaign suggests Australia remains an important market for the brand. Local pricing, specifications and timing are expected to be announced closer to the vehicle’s international launch if an Australian release is approved.
