Mercedes-AMG has expanded its second-generation GT 4-Door Coupé range with the global reveal of the new GT 53, an all-electric performance liftback that combines four-door practicality with AMG’s sports-car focus.
The GT 53 uses a five-door liftback body, despite the Coupé name, offering the space of a large executive sedan. AMG developed it in-house, alongside the two-door AMG GT sports car.
The GT 53 sits below the more powerful GT 55 and GT 63 variants, at the entry point to AMG’s new electric flagship family. The previous generation used petrol engines with mild-hybrid assistance, while the new model moves to the dedicated AMG.EA electric platform.
Australian prospects of the Mercedes-AMG GT 53
Mercedes-Benz Australia has confirmed that the new electric GT 4-Door Coupé will come to Australia, with the two high-tier, tri-motor variants, the GT 55 (600kW) and GT 63 (860kW), but the entry-level GT 53 remains under consideration.
German sales for the longer-range, dual-motor GT 53 EV begin on 13 August 2026, with prices starting from €115,430.
Powertrain and performance details
The GT 53 EV uses two permanently excited electric motors, one on each axle and its rear motor uses a two-speed transmission. It has a shorter first gear that supports hard launches and urban efficiency, while second gear improves high-speed performance, motorway comfort and range.
The new GT 53 EV runs on a continuous output of 270kW without overheating and can achieve a top speed of 250km/h with the support of the optional AMG Driver’s Package.

The front motor works as a boost unit with a maximum duration of 53 seconds and disconnects when the car needs less power, reducing energy use, then reconnects when the driver demands stronger acceleration or extra traction.
The system continuously moves power between the front and rear axles, and torque vectoring also divides power between the rear wheels, helping the car maintain grip across varying road conditions.
Suspension and driving modes
Standard AMG Ride Control combines air springs with adaptive dampers, and drivers can choose Comfort, Sport or Sport+ suspension settings.
Six AMG Dynamic Select programs alter the car’s response: Comfort, Sport, AMGForce Sport+, Slippery, Eco, and Individual, and a separate Response Control dial lets the driver adjust motor response without changing the main driving mode.

Mercedes-AMG GT 53 EV’s exterior and design

The overhauled GT 53 4-Door EV’s exterior design remains similar to the higher-tier GT 55 and GT 63 and appears highly aggressive and futuristic as its low-slung, ultra-wide look departs heavily from traditional 4-door dimensions to lean fully into supercar proportions.
The GT 53 measures 5094mm long, 1959mm wide and 1411mm tall, with a 3040mm wheelbase, and it weighs 2375kg and provides up to 507 litres of boot space, plus a 62-litre front storage or frunk.
It now sits on the AMG.EA electric platform and is 46mm longer and 40mm lower than its petrol predecessor, with a much longer wheelbase and ultra-short front and rear overhangs. Here are some of its key exterior highlights:

The standard active rear spoiler stays retracted at speeds up to 150km/h, then changes angle according to speed, acceleration and driving style, but the driver can also extend it manually.
The optional active rear diffuser extends the body’s rear contour to reduce drag, which is measured at an amazing 0.21 drag coefficient.
AMG sound character in an electric car
The AMGForce Sport+ program recreates the sound and gear-change behaviour of a V6 AMG. AMG recorded the 3.0-litre inline-six from the former AMG E 53 Coupé using 16 microphone positions and more than 100 measurements and used them on the GT 53 EV to match sound with acceleration, load changes and manual shifts.
Drivers can use the steering-wheel paddles to trigger simulated gear changes, and they can also select Powerful, Balanced or Minimal sound settings and move the sound character between Classic and Futuristic.

Interior and technology features
The cabin combines a low driving position with four-door comfort. The interior equipment includes:

Drivers can customise steering-wheel shortcuts, aerodynamics and other settings through AMG Set-Up.
Bottom line
The Mercedes-AMG GT 53 gives AMG’s electric four-door flagship entry point while still delivering impressive performance. It combines 400kW, all-wheel drive, up to 809km of WLTP driving range and exceptionally fast charging with a practical liftback cabin. Australia will receive the broader electric GT 4-Door family, but Mercedes-Benz has yet to confirm whether the GT 53 will join it locally.
