Audi A2 e-tron debuts as the brand's most efficient model

Audi has unveiled the A2 e-tron, an electric hatchback that focuses on energy efficiency, useful range and everyday practicality. The brand will build it in Ingolstadt, Germany, and says it developed the model 21 months faster than comparable earlier vehicles.

The new A2 e-tron serves as a spiritual successor and borrows the core philosophy of the original Audi A2, which was discontinued 20 years ago. The 1999 original A2 was famous for its hyper-efficient design, and the all-new A2 e-tron honours this by being launched as the most energy-efficient production model in Audi’s history.

Audi’s release covers German-market models but gives no Australian launch timing, local specifications or pricing. German orders for this EV open on 10 September 2026, with first deliveries starting in December 2026.

A2 e-tron variants start at €38,200 (A$61,600) and end at €51,200 (A$82,600) in its home market. The new electric hatchback is expected to sit below the Q4 e-tron in Australia, releasing as a new entry-level electric model from the brand.

Powertrain, range and charging

Audi will offer four rear-wheel-drive (RWD) A2 e-tron variants with three battery sizes: the 125kW and 140kW models use smaller LFP batteries, while the 170kW and 240kW versions get an 84kWh NMC battery.

Every variant carries a German energy-efficiency class A rating and produces zero tailpipe CO2 emissions.

Audi uses permanent-magnet synchronous motors and silicon-carbide power electronics to cut conversion losses. Polished gear teeth, low-friction bearings and low-viscosity oils also aim to reduce energy use.

Drivers can choose four levels of regenerative braking – steering-wheel paddles select D1, D2 or D3, while the B setting enables one-pedal driving to a standstill.

Exterior, aerodynamics and driving hardware

Audi claims a 0.24 drag coefficient for the A2 e-tron, its best result in the compact segment. The A2 e-tron uses a 2.77-metre wheelbase, short overhangs, a sloping roofline, an enclosed underbody, active cooling intake, aero wheels and wheel-arch gap reducers to manage airflow.

Audi offers 18- to 20-inch wheels, and it calls the 19-inch aerodynamic wheel setup the most efficient choice.

Buyers can choose comfort suspension, sport suspension or adaptive dampers. The 240kW car includes adaptive damping, while the 170kW model offers it as an option. The brand also offers progressive steering, while the 240kW variant includes it as standard.

The A2 e-tron’s distinctively rounded roofline, wheel arch creases, and side window graphics are heavily influenced by the original 1999 A2, and it also includes:

  • Touch-sensitive door handles
  • Split rear windscreen divided by a spoiler
  • Active front cooling intake grille shutter
  • Integrated front sensor suite
  • High-mounted front daytime running lights (DRLs)
  • Full-width horizontal LED bar across the tailgate
  • Adaptive matrix LED headlights (optional)

The A2 e-tron EV is available in an understated base exterior or a sportier S Line package with high-gloss black diffusers, side skirts, and aggressive front intakes.

Interior and technology

The A2 e-tron carries 396 litres in its boot, expanding to 1336 litres with the rear seats folded, and the 170kW and 240kW models add a 13-litre front boot or frunk.

A fabric-covered Softwrap trim runs across the dashboard, doors and rear cabin and the model also offers a 1.6-square-metre panoramic glass roof with UV and heat protection.

Moving the gear selector to the steering column frees space for a Qi 2.2 wireless phone tray that can charge two phones at up to 25 watts.

Audi also fits its Fidlock magnetic fastening system as standard, which lets owners secure cupholders, charging bags and tie-down straps with one hand. An optional luggage package adds further Fidlock points.

A curved display combines an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch touchscreen. Audi offers an augmented-reality head-up display, 30-colour ambient lighting, Microsoft Outlook and Teams integration, voice-controlled calls, an AI assistant and an e-tron route planner that factors in traffic, terrain and charger availability.

Safety and parking

Standard equipment of the A2 e-tron includes adaptive cruise control, a reversing camera, parking sensors, side assist, exit warning, rear cross-traffic assist, front cross-traffic assist, emergency brake assist, swerve assist and emergency assist.

Audi says its emergency braking system can stop for an imminent vehicle or pedestrian crash at up to about 85km/h. Optional adaptive cruise assist plus adds active lane guidance up to 210km/h and can stop at red lights.

Optional parking technology includes 3D surround-view cameras, automated parking, remote parking, trained parking for up to 5 manoeuvres and reverse assist that can remember about 50 metres of travel.

Faster production, more recycled materials

Audi says the A2 e-tron uses more than 300 recycled-material components, including more than 100 parts with post-consumer recycled content. Optional Softwrap trim and three optional sports-seat fabrics use 100% recycled polyester.

Audi will build the A2 e-tron alongside the A3 in Ingolstadt before the deliveries for the A2 start in December 2026 in Europe.

The newly revealed 2027 Audi A2 e-tron is currently under evaluation for the Australian market, and representatives have mentioned that they are looking at the compact EV “very seriously”.

If the A2 e-tron receives the green light, it is expected to arrive in local showrooms sometime in 2027 and likely be positioned as the brand’s new entry-level electric car, sitting below the Q4 e-tron.
