Ampol has officially opened Australia’s fastest public electric vehicle chargers in Sydney, unveiling two ultra-fast 400kW units at its Eastern Creek service centre on the M4 Motorway. The chargers developed by AmpCharge are among the fastest EV chargers currently available in Australia and are the first 400kW chargers to be deployed within Ampol’s national charging network.

The opening brings Australia’s fastest EV charging capability closer to the Sydney CBD. This improves access for metropolitan and long-distance EV drivers alike. The two Eastern Creek EV charging sites with 4 drivethrough bays made by AmpCharge (Ampol’s EV charging brand) are located on either side of the M4 Motorway, which is a primary transport artery.

Although the new ultra-fast EV chargers have been operating since around September 2025, they were officially opened last week by the Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen.

They are part of a total of 10 new AmpCharge EV charging bays, located at the redeveloped Westbound Ampol Foodary service centre at Eastern Creek. The inaugurated AmpCharge site now includes:

  • 2 x 400kW fast chargers (made by ABB in Germany)
  • 8 x 360kW fast chargers

The new 400kW chargers are joint-fastest in the country, matching ultra-fast chargers already operating in NSW at Pheasants Nest along the Hume Highway south of Sydney.

Both the eastbound and westbound sites include 10 AmpCharge EV charging bays each. Out of the ten, there are four drivethrough charging bays per site, allowing easier access for large commercial vehicles and EVs towing trailers.

The Eastern Creek service centres sit on one of Australia’s busiest motorways, with more than 300,000 vehicles using the M4 Motorway each day. Ampol says the location is strategically important, allowing commuters, long-distance drivers, and commercial operators to refuel, recharge EVs, and eat and rest.

The redeveloped Ampol Foodary service centres also bring together several well-known food brands and dining and family facilities for comfortable journeys.

Designed to support next-gen EVs with ultra-fast charging

Only electric cars that can accept very high charging speeds will get the full benefit of these ultra-fast chargers. Such EVs include the Volvo EX60, which is capable of charging at up to 370kW, MG IM5 and IM6, which both are capable of charging at up to 396kW. These vehicles can charge from 10 to 80% in under 20 minutes when connected to high-power chargers like these.

However, despite being the most powerful public EV chargers in Australia, the 400kW units do not provide enough output for some next-generation EVs such as the Zeekr 7X, which is claimed to support charging speeds of up to 420–450kW.
