After a mixed start to 2025, Australia’s new-car market posted record monthly sales for July and highlighted a changing industry balance. Leading the charge? The Toyota HiLux, followed closely by the brand’s hero SUV, the Toyota RAV4, comfortably ahead of the Ford Ranger and Everest ute-SUV duo.

According to the latest Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) data, 104,244 new vehicles were delivered across Australia in July 2025, a 2% increase over July 2024’s record of 102,181. Despite this spike, the year-to-date total (728,374 units) remains down 0.9% compared to the same period last year.

This shift in momentum was driven by a mix of refreshed model availability, surging Chinese brands, and Australia’s ongoing love for utes and SUVs.

Quick takeaways

  • Toyota HiLux (4,676) remains Australia’s top-selling car in July, followed closely by the surging RAV4 (4,415).
  • Last month’s sales leader, the Ford Ranger, slid down to third in July 2025 sales, still ahead of the next best-seller (Ranger-based Everest SUV) by 1,500 units.
  • Rounding out the top 5 of the month was another ute – the Isuzu D-Max.
  • Chinese brands, such as Chery and BYD, are making significant gains, with Chery Tiggo 4 Pro entering the top 10 ahead of stalwarts like the Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Tucson and Kona.
  • Tesla deliveries dropped sharply, with just 917 units sold, resulting in a decline to 22nd place as supply gaps impacted availability.

Segment shake-up: SUVs and utes dominate

SUVs and utes continued to dominate the rankings in July. Six of the top 10 models were either SUVs or 4WDs, indicating ongoing Australian demand for practicality, space, and versatility. The Toyota Prado made a dramatic return to form, jumping from just 21 sales in July 2024 to 2,339 in July 2025, a staggering 11,038% increase, driven by the release of its new-generation model.

Only one traditional passenger car, the Toyota Corolla, made it to the top 10, underlining the segment’s declining grip on buyers.

Final thoughts

Toyota may still wear the crown, but the race for the top 5  is heating up. With Chinese brands continuing to expand their presence in the mainstream and new models disrupting traditional segments, brands like Mazda, Hyundai and Kia cannot afford to take it easy to maintain market share.
