The Toyota Hilux BEV, Subaru Trailseeker and Subaru Uncharted all secured five-star ANCAP safety ratings in the latest round of safety assessments, but the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé wasn’t quite able to join them. The luxury small car has been awarded a four-star ANCAP safety rating under the latest 2023–2025 testing protocols.

The ANCAP rating applies to all BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé variants sold in Australia from January 2025 onwards. While the model performed strongly in child occupant protection, vulnerable road user protection and safety assist categories, its Adult Occupant Protection score of 78% fell short of the 80% threshold required for a five-star result.

“The BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé both performed well when assessing their crash avoidance capability, however their overall star ratings were limited by mixed results in the two frontal crash tests,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé ANCAP safety score breakdown

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé
AssessmentSafety score
Adult Occupant Protection78% (31.24/40)
Child Occupant Protection85% (42.09/49)
Vulnerable Road User Protection85% (53.92/63)
Safety Assist81% (14.61/18)

Adult Occupant Protection – 78%

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé’s four-star rating was primarily limited by its Adult Occupant Protection score of 78%, narrowly missing ANCAP’s 80% threshold for a five-star result.

The vehicle scored maximum points in the side-impact (6.00/6) and oblique pole (6.00/6) tests, while also achieving a perfect 4.00/4 score in the far-side impact assessment. Front-seat whiplash protection was also strong at 2.96 out of 3 points.

However, points were lost in the frontal crash tests. The frontal offset (MPDB) test returned just 2.38 out of 8 points, while the full-width frontal test scored 6.48 out of 8 points. ANCAP cited an elevated risk of chest injury for the driver in the MPDB test and for both the driver and rear passenger in the full-width frontal test. The safety body also noted that dashboard structures could increase the risk of upper-leg injuries for front-seat occupants.

Child Occupant Protection – 85%

The BMW performed strongly in Child Occupant Protection, scoring 42.09 out of 49 points.

The vehicle achieved 15.57 out of 16 points for frontal crash protection of child occupants and 7.72 out of 8 points in side-impact testing. It also scored 11.81 out of 13 points for child restraint installation and compatibility, while on-board child safety features contributed a further 7.00 out of 13 points.

These results indicate strong protection for younger passengers in both frontal and side-impact crash scenarios.

Vulnerable Road User Protection – 85%

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé scored 53.92 out of 63 points for protecting pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

Strong performances were recorded in AEB cyclist testing (8.57/9), AEB motorcycle testing (6.00/6) and motorcycle lane support assessments (3.00/3). The vehicle also achieved 12.53 out of 18 points for head protection and 8.59 out of 12 points for knee and tibia protection.

One notable area of improvement was the reverse AEB pedestrian (backover) test, where the BMW scored 0.00 out of 1 point.

Safety Assist – 81%

The BMW’s suite of driver assistance technologies helped it achieve 14.61 out of 18 points.

The car scored 3.75 out of 4 points for rear-end AEB performance, 3.47 out of 4 points in junction and crossing scenarios, and a perfect 3.00 out of 3 points for its lane support system.

Speed assistance systems contributed 2.15 out of 3 points, while driver monitoring scored 0.25 out of 1 point. Seatbelt reminder systems achieved the maximum available score.

Final words

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé falls just short of a five-star ANCAP safety rating, largely due to its Adult Occupant Protection score of 78 per cent. However, it continues to offer strong child occupant protection, effective crash-avoidance technologies and solid protection for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.

For buyers prioritising safety technology and premium small-car practicality, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé remains a competitive option in the luxury small car segment.
