BYD has officially launched the third-generation Atto 3 in China, introducing a heavily upgraded electric SUV that brings bigger dimensions, rear-wheel drive, advanced driver assistance technology and the company’s headline-grabbing flash charging system.
Sold in China under the Yuan Plus nameplate, it can charge from 10 to 70% in just 5 minutes and delivers up to 630km (CLTC) of driving range. Its pricing in China starts from 119,900 yuan (~AUD $24,600) and goes up to 149,900 yuan (~AUD $30,800) across four variants.
The updated BYD Atto 3 (with the 5-minute flash charging) is not expected to launch in Australia anytime soon. However, the ultra-fast charging technology is locked in for Australia with the upcoming Denza Z9 GT electric wagon.
BYD’s 5-minute flash charging takes centre stage
The headline feature of the third-gen BYD Atto 3 is its new flash charging technology, which allows it to charge from:
- 10 to 70% in just 5 minutes
- 10 to 97% in 9 minutes
An additional three minutes may be required in sub-zero temperatures. That makes BYD’s latest EVs some of the fastest-charging electric vehicles currently available anywhere in the world.
BYD is struggling with a battery crunch
Demand for BYD’s flash-charge EVs has reportedly exploded in China. According to reports from CarNewsChina, the company is already facing battery supply constraints as production ramps up.
Outstanding orders for BYD flash-charge vehicles are believed to have exceeded 140,000 units. At the same time, BYD is accelerating its nationwide charging rollout under the “Flash Charging China” strategy.
Third-gen Chinese BYD Atto 3 performance
One of the biggest mechanical changes in the new-generation BYD Atto 3 (Chinese launch) is the move to a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout.
It’s built on BYD’s updated e-Platform 3.0 Evo and uses a rear-mounted electric motor producing either 200kW or 240kW. Battery choices include the 57.5 kWh Blade Battery and 68.5kWh Blade Battery. Depending on the variant, BYD claims CLTC driving range figures of 540km and 630km.
Upper Atto 3 trims can be equipped with BYD’s DiPilot 300 “God’s Eye B” driver assistance system.
A bigger Atto 3 with a sharper design
The third-generation BYD Atto 3 (China launch) evolves BYD’s familiar “Dragon Face” styling language with a cleaner and more modern appearance. The SUV has also grown to 4,665 mm long (+210 mm than the outgoing model).
BYD has also boosted practicality with a powered 180-litre front trunk and up to 750 litres of boot space. It now comes in nine exterior colours, including dual-tone finishes.
Third-gen BYD Atto 3 interior

Inside, the new BYD Atto 3 takes a major step up in both technology and comfort. The cabin now features:
- Larger floating infotainment display
- Latest DiLink operating system
- New two-spoke steering wheel
- Head-up display
- Column-mounted gear selector
- 50W wireless phone charging
Higher-spec variants also add a premium equipment list for the segment. Storage solutions have also been expanded with features like rear under-seat drawers and a glasses holder.
BYD Atto 3 and flash charging’s launch in Australia
Australia is not currently confirmed to receive this exact Atto 3 version. Instead, local buyers are expected to get the heavily updated BYD Atto 3 Evo during the second half of 2026.

The Australian-market BYD Atto 3 Evo model has already cleared local regulatory approval and is expected to introduce major upgrades over the current vehicle, including:
- Updated rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive setups
- Faster DC charging
- Improved performance
- Revised styling
Flash charging is still coming to Australia
BYD’s flash-charging technology is still on track for Australia. Mark Harland, Chief Operating Officer of Denza Australia, said the technology will eventually expand beyond flagship Denza models.
Harland confirmed that the rollout is expected to extend to future BYD and Denza products as local charging infrastructure grows.
Upcoming Denza Z9 GT will lead the flash charging rollout
The first-ever car confirmed with this level of flash charging technology in Australia is the Denza Z9 GT, which is scheduled to arrive during the third quarter of 2026.

For comparison, the fastest-charging EV currently sold in Australia is the Zeekr 7X RWD, which claims:
- 10 to 80% charging in 13 minutes
- Charging speeds of up to 450kW
However, even that vehicle cannot fully exploit its charging capability using today’s Australian infrastructure.
BYD’s 1,500kW flash charging technology would raise the bar dramatically if the supporting network arrives as planned. BYD and Denza will deploy dedicated 1.5MW (1,500kW) flash charging stations across Australia to support the system.
The ultra-powerful 1,500kW flash chargers will deliver almost:
- 4 times the output of Australia’s current 400kW chargers
- 10 times the output of common 150kW chargers
Denza has planned the flash charger rollout in two phases across Australia:
Phase 1 – October 2026
The first flagship flash-charging sites will open at select Denza dealerships in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney.
Phase 2
The network will later expand to standard BYD dealerships nationwide as more compatible vehicles enter the market. Denza’s official said the aim is to have flash charging available across major flagship sites by the fourth quarter of 2026.

Bottom line
The new BYD Atto 3 is a major technology showcase for where BYD believes the EV market is heading. With rear-wheel drive, lidar-assisted driver tech, upgraded luxury features and industry-leading flash charging capable of adding massive range in minutes, the Chinese giant is pushing hard to remove one of the biggest barriers to EV ownership: charging time.
Australia won’t get this flash charging BYD model for now, but the upgraded Atto 3 Evo and BYD’s incoming flash charging infrastructure suggest local buyers are still about to experience a major leap forward in EV technology.
