Key highlights:

  • BYD Atto 8 can fast-charge from 10–97% in 9 minutes
  • Dual-motor Excellence delivers 570kW and accelerates to 100km/h in 4.6s
  • European launch is set for Q1 2027; Australian release remains unconfirmed

BYD has revealed the fully electric BYD Atto 8 at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, introducing a seven-seat SUV that combines serious performance with exceptionally quick charging. Its second-generation Blade Battery has a substantial 115kWh capacity, but the headline figure is its claimed ability to charge from 10 to 97% in just nine minutes using BYD’s Flash Charging technology.

The electric SUV will reach European dealerships in early 2027, although BYD has yet to confirm whether it will come to Australia.

115kWh battery charges in nine minutes

The Atto 8 uses a 115kWh second-generation Blade Battery, and its capacity is substantial, but the claimed charging speed is the bigger talking point. BYD says Flash Charging can replenish the battery from 10 to 97% in just nine minutes.

Drivers can reduce that time further by stopping at 70%, before the charging rate slows during the final stage, and the company also claims the battery can charge from 20 to 97% in 12 minutes in temperatures as low as -30°C.

These figures suggest the Atto 8 could spend less time charging than some combustion-engine SUVs take to refuel and pay for fuel, but the claimed times clearly depend on access to compatible Flash Charging infrastructure.

BYD’s Flash Charging technology makes these charging speeds possible, but drivers need access to a compatible charger. The network remains limited while BYD builds out the infrastructure, and the company says it plans to have 3,000 Flash Charging stations operating across Europe by the end of 2027.

That rollout will be important to the Atto 8’s appeal. The charging hardware may offer impressive speeds, but owners need suitable stations along their regular routes to take full advantage.

BYD Atto 8 Design and Excellence powertrains compared

Both Atto 8 versions use the same 115kWh battery and support the same charging capabilities, but their powertrains, acceleration and claimed driving ranges differ.

DrivetrainSingle motor RWDDual motor AWD
Power output340kW570kW
0-100km/h8.0 seconds4.6 seconds
EV range625km602km

The entry-level Design produces 340kW through a single electric motor driving the rear wheels, and that’s a healthy power figure, but the SUV’s substantial battery and overall weight mean it takes eight seconds to reach 100km/h.

The dual-motor Excellence lifts output to 570kW and cuts the sprint time to 4.6 seconds, and that extra performance comes with a range penalty: the claimed figure falls from 652km to 602km.

Both versions offer the same headline charging capability, so buyers won’t need to choose the more expensive powertrain to access Flash Charging.

As BYD’s flagship SUV in Europe, the Atto 8 comes with a generous standard equipment list, and both Design and Excellence models include:

  • Panoramic glass roof
  • 26-inch head-up display
  • Heating, ventilation and massage functions for the front seats
  • Heating, ventilation and massage functions for the two outer seats in the middle row
  • Two 50W smartphone chargers

The Excellence adds a refrigerator, providing another feature to distinguish the range-topping version.

BYD hasn’t announced European pricing yet, but it expects to reveal more details later in 2026, closer to the SUV’s planned spring 2027 sales launch in Europe.

BYD Atto 8 makes European debut

The Atto 8 made its European debut at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, and it will become BYD’s flagship seven-seat SUV in the region and its first three-row vehicle for Europe, where it will compete with the new Skoda Peaq.

The exterior doesn’t introduce a radical new design and combines familiar BYD styling cues in a five-metre-long SUV. The more significant changes sit underneath the bodywork, where BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and Flash Charging technology aim to reduce charging stops dramatically.

The fully electric Atto 8 also marks the global debut of the nameplate in this form. The vehicle already sells in China as the Tang L and has reached markets such as the United Arab Emirates as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

In Australia, a related version is already available to order as the plug-in hybrid BYD Sealion 8, which starts at $56,990 before on-road costs, and BYD hasn’t confirmed whether the fully electric Atto 8 will join the local range.
