BYD Australia has officially delivered its 100,000th vehicle in just over three years on sale, marking a major milestone for the fast-growing brand. The landmark handover went to Brisbane customer Tim Shaw, who took delivery of a Shark 6 Premium ute, a fitting symbol of the brand’s rapid rise in the local market.

This milestone comes as Australia’s EV market saw a sharp shift in EV demand (used and new) in March 2026, driven by rising fuel costs and already growing momentum in EV adoption.

Rapid growth since 2022

BYD entered Australia in November 2022 with the Atto 3 mid-size SUV, and since then has expanded to 10 models, with its dealer and service network growing nationwide.

The brand’s mix of electric and hybrid “new energy vehicles” has struck a chord with Australian buyers, driving strong demand across multiple segments.

Key models driving momentum

EV and SUV leaders

  • Sealion 7 SUV: currently BYD’s most popular all-electric model
  • Atto 2 compact SUV: gaining traction with its mix of tech, performance, and value

Ute Segment Strength

  • Shark 6 Premium Super Hybrid: Australia’s top-selling pickup/ute and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) among private buyers

Expanding the range (from May 2026)

  • Shark 6 Dynamic cab-chassis: tailored for tradies
  • Shark 6 Performance: more power and improved towing capability

Leadership reaction

BYD Asia Pacific General Manager Liu Xueliang personally handed over the milestone vehicle during a visit to Australia. He noted that BYD’s vehicles are resonating strongly thanks to their practicality, style, and suitability for Australian lifestyles.

BYD Australia COO Stephen Collins said, “The growth of BYD Australia over the last three and a half years has been remarkable. Australian motorists want stylish, practical and affordable new energy vehicles, now more than ever. It’s our pleasure to hand over our 100,000th vehicle today.”

Big delivery push incoming

BYD is ramping up supply to keep pace with the accelerating EV demand Down Under. Around 30,000 vehicles are expected to arrive here in May and June alone. Most of these units will be BYD models, with a smaller portion allocated to its premium sub-brand, Denza.

Intensifying market competition for BYD Australia

The local EV space is no longer dominated by a single player, but it’s now a full-scale battle. The key rivals for BYD Australia are:

  • Tesla: Model Y is competing closely with BYD’s Sealion 7
  • Geely: Multi-brand push with models like the Geely EX5 and Zeekr 7X entering top-selling ranks
  • Kia: Strong EV3 and EV5 sales are pushing it to second overall
  • Toyota: Still number one overall, but facing pressure from BYD hybrids. Seal 6 directly targets the Camry Hybrid segment
  • Budget EV segment: MG (MG4, upcoming S5) and Chery E5. These brands are competing aggressively with BYD in the sub-$40,000 bracket.

What’s next?

Hitting 100,000 deliveries is more than a milestone for BYD Australia. It’s a clear signal that the brand has firmly established itself as a major force in Australia’s evolving automotive landscape.

The Australian market is heading into a period of rapid transformation, with 2026 and 2027 set to bring a wave of new technology and specialised vehicles.
