BYD has expanded its Australian lineup with the launch of the all-new Seal 6 Sedan and Seal 6 Touring, introducing the brand’s latest DM-i 5.0 plug-in hybrid technology to local buyers.
Priced from $34,990 before on-road costs for the Seal 6 Sedan Essential and $39,990 before on-road costs for the Seal 6 Touring Premium, the new models are aimed at Australian motorists who prefer traditional sedan and wagon body styles but want the benefits of electrified driving.
The launch is significant for BYD Australia, as the Seal 6 range introduces what the company describes as its most advanced plug-in hybrid sedan and wagon pairing to date. Both models combine electric-first driving characteristics with the flexibility of a petrol engine for long-distance travel, delivering a claimed driving range of more than 1,000km on Australian roads from a full battery charge and a full fuel tank.
Two body styles target different buyers
While both vehicles share the same platform and plug-in hybrid powertrain architecture, BYD has differentiated them through their intended use cases.
The Seal 6 Sedan adopts a traditional three-box design with a focus on aerodynamic efficiency and refinement. It measures 4,840mm long, 1,875mm wide and 1,495mm high, riding on a 2,790mm wheelbase. Cargo capacity stands at 491 litres, expanding to 1,370 litres with the rear seats folded.
The Seal 6 Touring wagon offers greater practicality thanks to a taller roofline, roof rails and a power-operated tailgate. Luggage space increases to 670 litres and can expand to 1,535 litres with the rear seats folded, making it one of the more spacious wagons available in its price bracket.

Aerodynamic design prioritises efficiency
BYD has paid considerable attention to aerodynamics across both models.
The Seal 6 Sedan achieves a drag coefficient of 0.255Cd, aided by features such as semi-hidden door handles, an active grille shutter, optimised airflow management around the wheels and a carefully designed underbody.
The Touring’s wagon body shape inevitably increases aerodynamic resistance, but BYD claims a competitive 0.284Cd drag coefficient through the use of airflow separation technology and other efficiency-focused design measures.
Both variants feature BYD’s Ocean Series design language, incorporating “Deep Sea Eyes” LED headlights, flowing body lines and full-width taillights.
Interior combines practicality with technology
Inside, the Seal 6 range adopts a modern digital-focused cabin layout.

New BYD DM-i 5.0 plug-in hybrid system explained
The biggest headline for the Seal 6 range is the introduction of BYD’s latest DM-i 5.0 Super Hybrid technology.
Unlike many traditional hybrid systems where the petrol engine performs most of the driving duties, BYD’s setup prioritises electric propulsion. The electric motor drives the front wheels in most scenarios, while the petrol engine operates primarily as an energy generator or assists when additional efficiency is required.
At the centre of the system is a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine paired with BYD’s Blade Battery technology and an electric motor.
According to BYD, the petrol engine achieves a thermal efficiency of 46 per cent, making it one of the most efficient production engines currently available.

The BYD Seal 6 Sedan Essential uses a 10kWh Blade Battery, delivering a claimed 55km WLTP electric-only driving range. The BYD Seal 6 Touring Premium receives a larger 19kWh Blade Battery, increasing electric-only range to 100km WLTP.

The BYD Seal 6 range continues to use BYD’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery technology.
The Blade Battery has become a defining feature of BYD vehicles globally due to its emphasis on safety, durability and thermal stability. The battery is integrated into the vehicle’s structure through BYD’s Cell-to-Chassis architecture, improving rigidity while helping maximise space efficiency.
LFP chemistry is also known for enhanced longevity compared with some nickel-based battery alternatives and is less susceptible to thermal runaway.
Three driving modes operate automatically
The Seal 6 plug-in hybrid system automatically switches between three operating modes:
EV Mode
The vehicle runs solely on battery power, with the petrol engine switched off.
HEV Series Mode
The petrol engine generates electricity for the electric motor without directly driving the wheels.
HEV Parallel Mode
Both the petrol engine and electric motor work together to maximise efficiency and performance, particularly at highway speeds.
The transitions occur automatically, requiring no driver intervention.
