If you’ve filled up in the past few days and felt a sharper sting than usual, you’re not imagining it. Unleaded petrol (ULP91) prices across Australia’s eastern capitals have surged past 240 cents per litre in most zones, with some areas touching 260 cents.

This is not the gentle hum of the regular price cycle but a market reacting to ongoing global pressure from the Middle East.

The good news, if you can call it that, is that bargains still exist. Today’s snapshot reveals stark contrasts between zones, with savvy drivers saving up to 20 cents per litre by crossing a suburb or two.

Melbourne, Victoria

Melbourne’s inner city is bearing the heaviest burden, with Southbank’s BP Clarendon charging a staggering 259.9 cents per litre. But here’s a tip: drive ten minutes west to Kingsville, and you’ll find Burk Kingsville at 243.3 cents. That’s a saving of nearly 17 cents on every litre ($8.5 on a 50L tank). If you’re heading into the city today, fill up before you leave your zone

Sydney, New South Wales

Sydney’s fuel market is showing the most dramatic geographic divide of the three capitals. The City & East zone (with Metro Haberfield) is offering 239.9 cents, which is a full 14.6 cents cheaper than the Northern Beaches and North Shore zone, where prices have ballooned to 254.5 cents.

Brisbane, Queensland

The South zone, with Willawong’s Caltex at 240.5 cents, claims the cheapest fuel in the city today. The North zone is a close second at 241.5 cents, thanks to Pearl Energy Deagon. The East & Bayside zone is where Brisbane drivers are feeling the most pain.

Final thoughts

The geographical difference is real in Australia. A driver in Haberfield is paying 239.9 cents, while someone in Roseville is paying 254.5 cents in Sydney. The usual advice of filling up in the suburbs before you head into the city still holds
A few minutes of planning could save you some dollars today. Moreover, the recent fuel excise cut for the next three months will also offer some relief.
