Key highlights

  • Deepal Australia expects to reveal more about the S05 and S07 lineups in the coming weeks.
  • The S05 is expected to arrive in Australia in late 2026 or early 2027, although timing remains unconfirmed.
  • Plug-in hybrid versions have been announced for Europe, but Australian powertrain options are yet to be confirmed.

Deepal Australia has teased upcoming updates for its S05 and S07 SUVs, with details on local specifications and powertrain options expected to emerge in the coming weeks.

The announcement follows Changan’s unveiling of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of both SUVs for Europe at the 2026 Paris motor show. These models could give Australian buyers an alternative to conventional battery-electric vehicles, particularly those who want electric driving without relying entirely on public charging infrastructure.

However, Deepal has not confirmed whether either PHEV will come to Australia, or when the updated models will arrive.

Deepal S05 and S07 updates coming soon

In a statement, a spokesperson for Inchcape Australia, Deepal’s local distributor, said the company expected to share more information about the S05 and S07 lineups, including local specifications and powertrain options, in the coming weeks.

The distributor did not confirm specific models or launch dates.

The S05 is the more immediate prospect for Australian buyers. Initially expected to arrive in the latter part of 2025, the electric SUV now appears likely to reach local showrooms in late 2026 or early 2027, although this timing remains unconfirmed.

The smaller S05 would sit below the S07 in Deepal’s lineup, giving the brand another option in Australia’s competitive electric SUV market. Potential rivals include the BYD Atto 3 and electric SUVs from brands such as Chery and Omoda.

Could the Deepal S05 get a plug-in hybrid option?

Changan has confirmed a PHEV version of the S05 for Europe, with a right-hand-drive UK launch planned for October 2026. This raises the possibility of an Australian version, but no local approval has been announced.

The European S05 PHEV combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine rated at 63kW with a 172kW electric motor and an 18.4kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Total system power is rated at 190kW, while the claimed combined driving range is around 1,000km.

Despite being classified as a plug-in hybrid, its powertrain operates more like an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). The electric motor primarily drives the wheels, while the petrol engine can generate electricity to support the battery.

The UK-specification model can travel up to 100km on electric power alone under the quoted test-cycle figure. It supports AC charging at up to 11kW and DC fast charging at up to 55kW.

If introduced locally, this setup could appeal to Australian drivers who want to complete shorter daily trips using electricity while retaining petrol-powered backup for longer journeys. However, Australian specifications, driving range and charging performance have not been confirmed.

Deepal S07 could also gain a new powertrain

The larger S07 has also been confirmed for a PHEV version in Europe, using the same basic powertrain arrangement as the S05. Final range and fuel consumption figures for the larger SUV are yet to be announced.

In Australia, the S07 is currently offered with a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive electric powertrain producing 160kW and 320Nm. Its 79.97kWh battery delivers a claimed WLTP driving range of 475km, with charging supported at up to 11kW on AC power and 92kW on DC power.

The S07’s existing electric-only setup means a potential extended-range variant would broaden its appeal rather than simply replace the current model. Buyers would have to weigh the benefits of a petrol engine and longer-distance flexibility against the simpler operation of a battery-electric SUV.

Deepal looks to build its Australian sales

Deepal has been selling vehicles in Australia since late 2024, initially launching with the S07 before adding the E07 SUV and ute-style vehicle in 2025.

VFACTS new-vehicle sales data to 30 September 2026 recorded 924 Deepal vehicles across the S07 and E07 model lines for the year to date. The brand remains a smaller player than established Chinese competitors such as BYD and Geely.

As of October 2026, Deepal Australia is advertising the S07 for $47,990 drive-away with 20-inch alloy wheels, while stocks last. That compares with its initial retail price of $53,900 before on-road costs and options.

An expanded lineup could help Deepal attract more buyers, particularly if the S05 arrives with a choice of battery-electric and extended-range powertrains.

For now, Australian buyers will need to wait for the promised announcement. Local pricing, launch timing and the availability of PHEV or EREV variants remain unconfirmed.
