Ford has issued a recall affecting the Ford F-150 ute, due to a fault in the vehicle’s trailer system. A software glitch in the Trailer Module (TRM) can affect the trailer braking performance and turn signal lights.

The Ford F-150 is classified as a full-size pickup truck, often locally referred to as a “big ute” or “American pickup”. It occupies a premium segment above the mid-size Ford Ranger and is designed for heavy-duty towing and long-distance touring.

What’s the defect, and why is it so serious?

The issue in this big ute comes down to a software defect in the Trailer Module (TRM). When a trailer is connected, the TRM may lose communication with the vehicle, and this can lead to reduced or lost trailer braking performance and the turn signal lights not working as intended.

If the fault occurs, you could experience loss of trailer control while driving, and other drivers may not see your turn signals properly. Together, these issues increase the risk of an accident, potentially leading to serious injury or worse for occupants and other road users.
