The affordable electric car segment in Australia is set to heat up in 2026, with Geely officially confirming the arrival of its new all-electric EX2 hatchback.
Geely Auto Australia has announced the EX2 will join its local line-up in the second half of 2026, marking the brand’s entry into the compact city car space, and potentially reshaping the budget EV market.
A new entry-level electric from Geely
Positioned as Geely’s most affordable model, the EX2 is designed to make electric mobility more accessible for urban buyers. It sits on the brand’s Global Intelligent Electric Architecture (GEA) platform, which also underpins the Geely EX5 EV and Starray EM-i Super Hybrid. This shared platform allows flexible vehicle sizes and layouts, helping Geely keep costs down.
Geely says the EX2 focuses on:
- Easy city driving
- Smart use of space
- A tech-forward interior
- Compact dimensions with everyday practicality
Compact size, smart packaging

Despite its city-friendly footprint, the Geely EX2 is designed to maximise interior space. Key dimensions include:
| Length | 4,135mm |
| Width | 1,805mm |
| Height | 1,580mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,650mm |
Inside, it offers:
- Over 30 storage compartments
- A front boot (frunk) under the bonnet
- A cabin designed for daily commuting rather than long-distance touring
Design aimed at urban buyers
The Geely EX2 adopts a youthful and playful look, highlighted by:
- A distinctive ‘smile face’ front design
- Clean, simple body lines
- A range of pastel exterior colours
It’s clearly styled to appeal to first-time EV buyers and city drivers rather than performance-focused customers.
Australia’s cheapest EV? Pricing hints from China

While Australian pricing has not yet been announced, the EX2’s positioning in China suggests it could undercut key rivals. In its home market, where it is known as the Geome Xingyuan, pricing starts from:
- 68,800 yuan (around AU$15,000, converted)
For comparison:
- The BYD Atto 1 starts from $23,990 before on-road costs in Australia
- In China, the BYD Atto 1 (Seagull) starts slightly higher at 69,800 yuan
If Geely can maintain a competitive price locally, the EX2 could become Australia’s cheapest electric car when it arrives.
Powertrain and battery options

Australian specifications are still to be confirmed, but international versions give a strong indication of what’s possible.
| Category | Specification |
| Drivetrain | Rear-wheel drive |
| Electric motor output | 85kW |
| Torque | 150Nm |
| Battery option 1 | 30.12kWh LFP battery |
| Claimed range (China test cycle) | Up to 310km |
| Battery option 2 | 40.16kWh LFP battery |
| Claimed range (China test cycle) | Up to 410km |
| Australian range estimate | WLTP figures expected to be lower |
A proven bestseller in China
The Geely EX2 isn’t just a new name; it’s already a major success.
- China’s best-selling car in 2025
- Over 400,000 units sold in the past 12 months
- Nearly 50,000 units sold in September 2025 alone
This strong sales performance gives Geely confidence as it prepares the EX2 for global markets, including Australia.
What happens next?
Geely Auto Australia has confirmed that full specifications, variant details, driving range (WLTP) and local pricing will be announced closer to launch.
If priced right, the Geely EX2 could become a serious challenger to the BYD Atto 1, and a new benchmark for affordable electric cars in Australia.
