MobED showcases the future of modular robotics
MobED (Mobile Eccentric Droid) is a next-generation robotic mobility platform designed with adaptability and scalability at its core. It is developed by Hyundai Motor Group’s Robotics LAB.
The Urban Hopper and Golf concepts demonstrate how the modular platform can be adapted for different real-world applications.
What makes MobED different?
The platform is equipped with:
- Innovative Drive-and-Lift (DnL) module
- Eccentric posture control mechanism
These technologies allow MobED to maintain a perfectly level posture while travelling across uneven terrain, sloped surfaces and obstacles such as curbs up to 20 centimetres high.
One platform, multiple platforms
MobED Urban Hopper
- Functions as a personal mobility device similar to an electric scooter
- Designed for smooth, stable urban transportation
MobED Golf
- Operates as an autonomous golf caddie
- Provides a hands-free experience for golfers
Hyundai says the platform’s mounting-rail compatibility allows different modules to be fitted without requiring separate robots for individual tasks. Its expandable hardware and software architecture is designed to make MobED a highly customisable mobility platform for everyday life and leisure.
Concept Three reimagines the compact electric car
Winner award recipient Concept Three presents Hyundai’s vision for next-generation urban electric mobility. It is designed as the smallest member of the IONIQ family and introduces a new Aero Hatch design that combines:
- Compact exterior dimensions
- Maximised interior space
- Sporty proportions
- Improved aerodynamic efficiency
Exterior highlights
The design reinterprets Hyundai’s Art of Steel design language with a softer, more approachable appearance. Its key features include:
- Clean surfaces and dynamic character lines inspired by the natural tension of steel
- A transparent ducktail spoiler designed to improve aerodynamics while enhancing space efficiency
- Pixel lighting elements that also function as a communication interface between the vehicle and its user
Interior design
Inside, Concept Three adopts a driver-focused layout, with essential controls positioned around the steering wheel to improve concentration and safety. The cabin also incorporates:
- Soft upholstery surfaces
- Sustainable materials, including recycled textiles
- Aluminium foam
These materials support Hyundai’s vision of efficient and environmentally conscious electric mobility.
Crater Concept is designed for off-road adventure
The Crater Concept, which received the Winner award, explores Hyundai’s vision for an EV built specifically for off-road exploration. The concept combines structural strength, practical functionality and emotional design to create a vehicle intended to deliver confidence, comfort and control in demanding environments.
Exterior design
The rugged exterior features:
- Bold geometric styling
- Clean surfaces
- Exposed functional elements
- Parametric pixel lighting
- Roof-mounted auxiliary lights for improved visibility
- Hexagonal wheels
- Wide wheel arches
- Protective skid plates for greater durability and stability
Interior design
The cabin is engineered for durability, inspired by roll cage structures. Its features include:
- Wraparound bucket seats for ergonomic support
- Cylinder-style controllers
- Pixel-based steering feedback for precise vehicle control
- Hidden lighting that improves visibility without creating distractions
- Hyundai AddGear, allowing owners to personalise the vehicle for different lifestyles
What are the Red Dot Awards?
The Red Dot Award is regarded as one of the world’s three most prestigious design competitions and is organised by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany. It was established in 1955 and recognises excellence across three major categories: Product Design, Brands & Communication Design, and Design Concept.
Within the competition, “Best of the Best” is the highest individual award in each category for groundbreaking designs that establish new industry benchmarks. “Winner” is the standard baseline award that recognises products demonstrating outstanding design quality. “Luminary” is the Design Concept’s highest honour, selected from a group of five Best of the Best recipients as the year’s most inspiring design.
Bottom line
Hyundai’s three 2026 Red Dot awards highlight the breadth of its future mobility ambitions, spanning modular robotics, compact urban EVs and rugged off-road electric vehicles.
The company continues to demonstrate how its design philosophy is shaping innovative mobility solutions across multiple segments.
