Chery Australia has taken a significant step towards entering one of the country’s most competitive vehicle segments by revealing key specifications for the upcoming Chery Stockman ute, ahead of its local launch in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Designed specifically with Australian ute buyers in mind, the new dual-cab promises to combine the workhorse capability expected from traditional diesel-powered utes with the efficiency and low-emissions benefits of plug-in hybrid technology.

The headline act is a new 2.5-litre turbo-diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain, which Chery calls its Diesel Super Hybrid System. The electrified setup delivers a claimed 350kW of power and 800Nm of torque, figures that would place the Stockman among the most powerful dual-cab utes available in Australia.

With a targeted 3,500kg braked towing capacity, four-wheel drive and multiple locking differentials, the Chinese brand appears to be aiming squarely at established players such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi Triton and BYD Shark 6.

Chery enters Australia’s booming ute market

Chery Stockman

The arrival of the Stockman marks Chery Australia’s first serious entry into the lucrative ute segment, a category that consistently dominates Australian new vehicle sales charts. Dual-cab utes have become increasingly popular among tradies, fleet operators, regional buyers and families seeking a vehicle that can balance work duties with weekend adventures.

Rather than launching with a conventional diesel engine, Chery is betting on electrification as a key point of difference.

The Stockman’s Diesel Super Hybrid system combines a turbocharged diesel engine with an electric motor and battery pack, offering the ability to complete shorter daily journeys using electric power alone while retaining the long-distance touring and towing capabilities diesel buyers expect.

According to Chery, the Stockman can travel up to 100 kilometres in electric-only mode under NEDC testing, potentially reducing fuel consumption for drivers who regularly commute or travel around town.

Powerful diesel plug-in hybrid drivetrain

The most eye-catching figure in the specification sheet is the Stockman’s combined output of 350kW and 800Nm. For comparison, many popular diesel-powered dual-cab utes currently available in Australia produce between 140kW and 184kW, while torque outputs typically range from 450Nm to 600Nm.

While Chery has yet to reveal details regarding battery capacity, charging times or combined fuel consumption, the company says the hybrid system has been engineered to deliver strong performance without compromising practicality. Power is sent to all four wheels through a standard four-wheel-drive system, helping maximise traction on loose surfaces and challenging terrain.

3,500kg towing capacity confirmed

Chery Stockman

Towing remains one of the most important considerations for Australian ute buyers, and Chery has ensured the Stockman meets the benchmark expected in the segment. The upcoming ute will offer a 3,500kg braked towing capacity and a 750kg unbraked towing capacity, allowing it to tow caravans, boats, trailers and work equipment.

The towing credentials are supported by a heavy-duty chassis and suspension package designed to handle demanding loads. Chery says the vehicle has been developed with “genuine work capability” in mind, reinforcing its ambitions to compete with Australia’s established ute favourites.

Off-road hardware included as standard

The Chery Stockman appears to have been engineered for more than just towing and highway driving. Key off-road features include:

  • Front differential lock
  • Centre differential lock
  • Rear differential lock
  • Four-wheel-drive system
  • Standard all-terrain tyres
  • Minimum ground clearance of 247mm
  • Double-wishbone front suspension
  • Leaf-spring rear suspension

The inclusion of individually selectable front, centre and rear differential locks is particularly noteworthy, as such equipment is often reserved for specialised off-road vehicles.

Combined with substantial ground clearance and all-terrain tyres, the Stockman is expected to target buyers who regularly travel on unsealed roads or venture off the beaten track.

Big dimensions for work and family duties

Beyond power and capability, Chery is also highlighting the Stockman’s practical dimensions. The ute measures:

Length5,450mm
Width2,010mm
Height1,890mm
Wheelbase3,250mm

These figures place the Stockman among the larger dual-cab utes on sale in Australia. The generous wheelbase should contribute to improved cabin space, while the sizable tray has been designed to accommodate work tools, equipment and recreational gear.

Petrol-powered variant coming in 2027

Chery Stockman

In addition to the diesel plug-in hybrid model, Chery has confirmed a petrol-powered plug-in hybrid variant will join the Australian lineup in 2027. The move reflects the growing demand for electrified utes both in Australia and globally, with manufacturers increasingly exploring alternatives to conventional diesel-only powertrains.

Chery Australia Chief Operating Officer Lucas Harris said the Stockman had been developed to meet the changing expectations of ute buyers. “The Stockman represents Chery’s vision for the next generation of dual-cab utes, combining exceptional performance with impressive efficiency and genuine capability.”

Harris added that offering both diesel and petrol plug-in hybrid options would allow the brand to cater to a wide range of customers. “Ute buyers expect a vehicle that can work hard during the week, tackle weekend adventures and deliver strong value. Our Super Hybrid technology is designed to meet those expectations by combining electric driving capability with the power, towing and off-road performance customers demand.”

When will the Chery Stockman launch in Australia?

Chery Australia has confirmed the Stockman ute will launch locally in Q4 2026. The company has not yet announced pricing, trim levels, payload figures, battery specifications or fuel economy data. Those details are expected closer to launch.

However, based on the specifications revealed so far, the Chery Stockman is shaping up as one of the most ambitious new entrants to the Australian ute market, combining diesel power, plug-in hybrid technology and serious towing capability in a package aimed squarely at Australia’s love affair with dual-cab utes.
