Key highlights:

  • Jaguar Type 01 produces 757kW and 1365Nm
  • Up to 720km WLTP range is claimed
  • Australian orders open from 2027 at about $300,000

Jaguar has unveiled the all-electric Type 01 GT in New York, the first production model of its dramatic new era as a maker of high-end electric cars aimed at brands such as Porsche and Bentley. The large four-door EV will arrive in Australia, with orders opening from 2027 and an indicative starting price of about $300,000 before on-road costs.

It marks a major departure for Jaguar since the brand was born in 1935, when it competed against BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi with luxury models priced below $100,000. The iconic British brand is in a way burning its traditional luxury ICE rulebook to reinvent itself as an ultra-exclusive, electric-only luxury car maker.

Its styling draws heavily from the controversial Type 00 coupe concept, while its position in the market moves Jaguar substantially further upmarket.

Most powerful road-going Jaguar ever

The Type 01 EV’s tri-motor electric powertrain produces 757kW, uses Jaguar’s new JEA (Jaguar Electric Architecture), an 850-volt electrical system and a 118kWh battery. Using a 350kW DC charger, Jaguar says the Type 01 can add up to 321km of range in just 13 minutes.

Huge dimensions, low stance

The physical dimensions of the Jaguar Type 01 highlight its unusually long and incredibly low-slung grand tourer stance, and its standard 23-inch wheels dominate the car’s proportions, with 21-inch alloy wheels available as an option.

Length5235mm
Width2006mm
Height1403mm
Wheelbase3200mm
Kerb weight~2700kg
Ground clearance120mm to 150mm (adjustable)
Boot space450L (seats up);
1000L (rear seats folded)

The wheels span more than half the Type 01’s overall height. The new Jaguar is longer and lower than both the Porsche Panamera and the discontinued Jaguar XJ.

The Type 01 also introduces the JEA architecture with a 50:50 weight distribution, rear-biased all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering. Despite its huge dimensions, Jaguar claims an 11.5m turning circle.

Jaguar has given the Type 01 a long bonnet, low roofline and polarising front fascia and these proportions deliberately recall traditional petrol-powered luxury cars.

While the Type 01 looks nothing like the E-Type, Jaguar points to a specific similarity or Luxury Gap: the distance between the front axle and front door measures 898mm, or 17% of the car’s total length.

Air suspension and active aerodynamics

The active suspension and aerodynamics of the Type 01 work in unison to mask the car’s 2.7-tonne mass, deliver a traditional Jaguar ride quality, and unlock an exceptionally low 0.23 drag coefficient.

The car features a completely blunt, blocky front fascia, so the engineers relied heavily on active technology to make it the most aerodynamic Jaguar ever built.

The Type 01 uses double-wishbone front suspension and integral-link rear suspension and its Dynamic Air Suspension combines switchable-volume air springs with twin-valve active dampers. Pirelli P Zero tyres are standard.

Active front vents and a three-stage rear spoiler help manage airflow as the rear spoiler deploys to a seven-degree angle to reduce drag at highway speeds above 80km/h.

Jaguar claims this can increase range by up to 5 km, and at more than 155km/h, the spoiler moves to a 21-degree angle and generates 75kg of downforce. The suspension also lowers by 15mm when the spoiler extends at cruising speeds.

Long bonnet, hidden technology

Jaguar Type 01 exterior design is impossible to ignore with a long bonnet, low roofline and polarising front fascia. The bodywork remains deliberately clean, with frameless doors and much of the technology hidden from view.

At the front sits Jaguar’s new four-light design with 84mm-tall LED headlights. At the rear, the lights remain hidden until illuminated beneath a deployable spoiler that disappears when not in use.

The Type 01 also does away with a conventional rear windscreen, and a rear-facing camera feeds a digital rear-view display inside the cabin. The exterior of this luxury electric GT has also been a mix of shock, fascination, and intense debate in the automotive media.

Customers can choose from seven gloss and satin exterior finishes: Gloss, Visionary Silver, Dramatic White, Iconic Black, Compelling Blue, Refined Grey, Satin, Modernist Blue, and Mesmerising Copper.

Jaguar will also offer its Chromatic Moments collection for further personalisation, and that collection will be limited to just 60 examples globally, with additional options available.

Four-seat luxury interior

A central spine runs through the cabin and separates four individual seats, and all the seats feature heating and cooling, while the front seats also gain massage functions and 12-way adjustment.

A 24-inch OLED screen combines the instrument and infotainment functions behind the steering wheel, and a second 7.0-inch portrait touchscreen sits lower down for commonly used controls.

The infotainment system includes wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, over-the-air software updates, and a built-in 5G Wi-Fi hotspot. A large panoramic glass roof is also standard.

Audio comes from a full-width Panoramic Soundbar positioned at the base of the windscreen, supported by additional Meridian speakers integrated into the front headrests.

The Type 01 also comes with a broad range of driver-assistance technology. Standard systems include adaptive cruise control with traffic-jam assist, lane-keep assist and a 360-degree camera. The vehicle uses 10 external cameras, five radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors to monitor its surroundings.

Australian launch and pricing

At around $300,000, the Type 01 sits close to a high-spec Porsche Taycan Turbo EV ($317,600), a mid-grade Porsche Panamera 4S plug-in hybrid ($311,200) and a BMW i7, ($306,900). It remains well below the $495,000 Bentley Flying Spur.

Jaguar also plans an electric SUV to rival the Porsche Macan and Lotus Eletre, followed by a luxury two-door coupe. The Type 01 represents the first production step in Jaguar’s planned transformation into a more exclusive electric-car maker.
