Jaguar’s controversial Type 00 concept is heading to production as the new Type 01, with more than 1000PS, a claimed 690km range and a dramatic new design direction.

Jaguar has officially confirmed the name of its upcoming electric four-door GT, with the production version of the controversial Type 00 concept set to be called the Jaguar Type 01. The British brand says the Type 01 represents the beginning of a completely new era for Jaguar, following its decision to reposition itself as an ultra-luxury electric-only carmaker.

First revealed as the dramatic Type 00 concept in late 2024, the car sparked significant debate online thanks to its unconventional styling and Jaguar’s radical rebranding campaign. Now, the production-ready Type 01 is preparing to make its first public appearance in prototype form during the Monaco E-Prix on May 16–17, ahead of a full reveal later this year.

What does the Type 01 name mean?

According to Jaguar, the “Type” badge pays tribute to some of the brand’s most iconic models, including the C-Type, E-Type and F-TYPE. The “0” represents zero tailpipe emissions and electric propulsion, while the “1” signifies the first model in Jaguar’s next-generation line-up.

Jaguar Managing Director Rawdon Glover described the car as part of a “complete brand reset”. “We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before. Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance. The Jaguar Type 01 name is part of that story – for me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the ‘1’, our first car for a new chapter, a ‘one of a kind!’” said Glover.

More than 1000PS and 1300Nm confirmed

Jaguar has already confirmed several key specifications for the new electric flagship. The Type 01 will use a tri-motor all-wheel drive electric powertrain producing more than 735kW (1000PS) and over 1300Nm of torque, making it one of the most powerful Jaguars ever built.

The EV will ride on Jaguar’s dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) platform, which has been designed exclusively for electric vehicles and reportedly cannot support combustion engines. International reports suggest the Jaguar Type 01 will feature a large 120kWh battery pack capable of delivering more than 690km of claimed driving range, alongside technologies such as four-wheel steering.

Inspired by classic Jaguars, but radically different

Despite its futuristic appearance, Jaguar says the Type 01 was heavily inspired by historic models from across the company’s 90-year history. The EV retains traditional grand tourer proportions with an unusually long bonnet and sweeping roofline, a notable contrast to many modern electric vehicles.

However, its blocky surfacing, minimalist detailing and bold proportions mark a major departure from previous Jaguars, including the now-discontinued XJ luxury sedan. Jaguar says the design follows its new “Exuberant Modernism” philosophy, which underpins the company’s broader transformation strategy.

The Type 01 replaces Jaguar’s cancelled electric XJ

The Jaguar Type 01 effectively succeeds the cancelled electric Jaguar XJ project, which was shelved in 2021 shortly before launch. Former JLR CEO Thierry Bolloré cancelled the next-generation XJ as part of Jaguar’s move toward a more exclusive, lower-volume EV-focused future.

That transformation also saw Jaguar discontinue much of its existing line-up, including the XE, XF and F-TYPE, as the brand prepared for a dramatic reinvention. The Type 01 is expected to become the foundation for Jaguar’s future electric range, with its technology, design language and performance philosophy set to influence upcoming models.
