MG 7 and MG ZS score 5-star ANCAP safety rating

The 2026 models of MG 7 and MG ZS get 5-star ANCAP ratings. For ZS, it's a jump from previous 4-star rating in December 2024.

MG Motor Australia has announced that the 2026 MG 7 and MG ZS have received a five-star ANCAP safety rating. This applies to all variants of the MG 7 and MG ZS sold from December 2025 onwards in Australia.

The new MG 7 is a mid-size fastback sedan, while the updated MG ZS is a subcompact crossover SUV. The 2026 MG 7 is offered in one fully equipped trim with petrol and diesel options and priced at AU$44,990 (before on-roads). The 2026 MG ZS starts at AU$23,990 (driveaway) and is available in base petrol and hybrid variants.

In a front offset crash, the 2026 MG 7’s body stayed strong and stable. It showed GOOD protection for the head, neck, and most body areas of the driver and front passenger while ADEQUATE protection for the driver’s chest and lower legs, and the front passenger’s lower legs.

In a full-width front crash, Driver protection was GOOD for all key areas. Rear passenger neck protection was ADEQUATE. Rear passenger chest protection was MARGINAL. A penalty was applied because the doors did not unlock automatically after the crash.

In side crashes, including a severe oblique pole impact, it showed GOOD protection for almost all body areas except ADEQUATE chest protection. The centre airbag worked well in side impacts. Protection against occupants moving across the cabin in far-side crashes was ADEQUATE.

Doors and windows of the MG 7 remained usable for a short time if the car entered water. Emergency responder information (Rescue Sheet) was also available.

In front offset crashes, the 2026 MG 7 showed GOOD protection for most body areas of both 6-year-old and 10-year-old dummies, except for the Adequate neck protection for the 10-year-old dummy.

In side crashes, head protection for the 10-year-old dummy was ADEQUATE while protection for all other body areas for both children was GOOD.

Lower ISOFix mounts were fitted on the outer rear seats, and top tether anchor points on all rear seats. Most child restraints sold in Australia and New Zealand fit correctly in the rear seats, except one Type A capsule that could not be installed safely in the centre rear seat. No child presence detection (CPD) system was fitted in the 2025 MG 7.

Vulnerable road user protection

For pedestrians, the 2026 MG 7 offered ADEQUATE protection to the head across most of the bonnet and windscreen, except POOR protection around the windscreen pillars and bonnet edges. It provided GOOD protection for the pelvis, thighs, and lower legs of the road occupants.

The autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system detected pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists and performed GOOD in forward driving situations, including turning. Performance when reversing was MARGINAL.

For Cyclist safety, the MG 7 showed GOOD AEB performance at all tested speeds. Warning system alerted occupants if a cyclist was approaching from behind. Motorcyclist detection showed GOOD performance too.

Safety assist

AEB (car-to-car) performance of the 2026 MG 7 was GOOD in rear-end, junction, and many crossing scenarios while ADEQUATE in head-on crash prevention. Lane support system showed GOOD performance, including emergency lane keeping. Speed assistance system (SAS) was working too, with speed limit information function (SLIF) and intelligent speed limiter (ISL).

In a front offset crash, the 2026 MG ZS’s cabin stayed strong and kept its shape. It showed ADEQUATE protection for the driver’s chest and lower legs and front passenger’s chest. Front passenger’s lower legs and the upper legs of both the driver and front passenger were MARGINALLY protected. Otherwise, it showed GOOD protection for all other key body areas.

In the full-width front crash, driver protection was GOOD for all body areas, rear passenger head protection was MARGINAL, and rear passenger neck and chest protection was ADEQUATE.

In side crashes, it had GOOD protection for all body areas. In the oblique pole impact, chest protection was ADEQUATE, and all other areas were GOOD.

The 2026 MG ZS included a centre airbag, and in far-side crashes, protection against occupant movement was MARGINAL in vehicle-to-vehicle impacts and ADEQUATE in vehicle-to-pole impacts.

A rescue sheet was available for emergency services, and the multi-collision braking system was fitted. If the car entered water, the doors remained operable for the minimum required time, but window operation was not confirmed.

In front crashes, the 2025 MG ZS showed ADEQUATE protection for the neck of the 10-year-old dummy while GOOD protection for all other body areas of both 6-year-old and 10-year-old dummies.

In side crashes, the head protection for the 10-year-old dummy was ADEQUATE, chest protection for the 10-year-old dummy was POOR, while all other body areas for both children were GOOD.

ISOFix mounts and top tether anchor points were fitted on the rear seats. No child presence detection system was fitted. All tested child seats available in Australia and New Zealand were fitted correctly in all rear seats.

Vulnerable road user protection

For pedestrians, the 2026 MG ZS offered GOOD to ADEQUATE protection across most of the bonnet and windscreen. MARGINAL to POOR protection near the base of the windscreen and the stiff windscreen pillars. Pelvis and thigh protection was mixed, with GOOD and POOR areas, and lower leg protection was GOOD.

The AEB system can detect pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists and showed GOOD performance in straight-line tests, mixed performance in turning scenarios, and no AEB function when reversing.

Cyclist AEB showed ADEQUATE performance, avoiding or reducing crashes at many speeds and a warning was also provided if a cyclist approached from behind. Motorcyclist detection showed GOOD performance.

Safety assist

The 2026 MG ZS was GOOD in many rear-end, junction, crossing, and head-on scenarios. Lane support system (LSS) also showed GOOD performance, including in emergency lane situations. The speed assistance system read speed signs and automatically slowed down the car.

What does ANCAP say about the MG 7 and MG ZS?

ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Carla Hoorweg, said, “ANCAP encourages safety improvements from all manufacturers as part of their ongoing design updates, and MG should be commended for proactively making improvements to the ZS.”

This statement comes after the small SUV, MG ZS, improved in safety rating, going from a 4-star ANCAP rating in December 2024 to a 5-star ANCAP rating in December 2025.
