MG has confirmed pricing for its first electric ute in Australia, with the 2027 MG U9 EV priced at $78,990 before on-road costs. The electric dual-cab ute is due to arrive between October and December 2026, with MG currently taking registrations of interest in Australia.
It will be sold locally in a single, highly specified dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant. That puts the MG U9 EV directly into the price territory of the upcoming Toyota HiLux BEV, which is priced at $76,490 before on-roads in SR guise and $82,990 before on-roads as an SR5. The MG also sits above the diesel U9 range, which currently tops out at $59,990 drive-away. The smaller KGM Musso EV remains cheaper, with its Australian range priced between $60,000 and $64,000 drive-away, depending on the variant.

430km range and 325kW of power
Under the skin, the MG U9 EV uses a 102.2kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery and two electric motors. Combined outputs are rated at 325kW and 700Nm, with MG claiming a 0-100km/h time of 5.8 seconds. The claimed WLTP driving range is 430km, while charging is supported at up to 11kW using AC power and 115kW using DC fast charging.
MG says a 20 to 80 per cent DC charge takes 42 minutes. There is also vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, allowing the ute to run electrical equipment from its battery. The external outlet can supply up to 6.6kW, while three outlets inside the cabin can provide up to 2.2kW. For Australian buyers, the more important figure may be the U9 EV’s towing capacity.
3500kg towing capacity gives the U9 EV a point of difference
The MG U9 EV has a 3500kg braked towing capacity, putting it on par with popular diesel utes such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux. It comfortably exceeds the 2000kg towing limit quoted for the HiLux BEV, while the KGM Musso EV offers between 1800kg and 2300kg depending on the variant.
Payload is rated at 685kg, while the ute’s tub is large enough to accommodate a standard pallet. There’s also a 236-litre storage compartment under the bonnet, and unlike the diesel MG U9, the electric model uses four-wheel electronic air suspension.
What equipment does the MG U9 EV get?
The MG U9 EV will arrive with a substantial list of standard equipment, including a hands-free power tailgate, surround-view camera and 12.3-inch digital instrument and infotainment displays. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 15W wireless phone charger and an eight-speaker JBL sound system are also standard.
The front seats are leather-trimmed, with the driver’s seat offering heating, ventilation and massage functions. The front passenger seat is heated, while the steering wheel is also heated. MG says the U9 EV has a five-star ANCAP rating, although ANCAP had not published the Australian rating at the time of writing. The closely related Maxus eTerron has a five-star Euro NCAP rating with a 2024 date stamp.
MG U9 EV dimensions and rivals
At 5500mm long, 1997mm wide and 1860mm tall, the MG U9 EV is a large ute. Its 3300mm wheelbase is also 215mm longer than that of the dual-cab HiLux BEV. MG’s parent company SAIC describes the ute’s construction as “semi-monocoque”, rather than the body-on-frame construction used by the HiLux BEV.
The MG U9 EV will therefore enter a still-small Australian electric ute market, with the Toyota HiLux BEV and KGM Musso EV among its key alternatives. The MG’s combination of 430km range, 325kW, 700Nm and 3500kg towing capacity gives Australian buyers another electric option for work, towing and recreational use when it arrives later this year.
