Key highlights:

  • Nissan will reveal its new Australian model on 8 October
  • Frontier Pro testing includes towing, steep grades and off-roading
  • The PHEV ute produces 320kW and 800Nm

Nissan Australia is finally preparing to reveal its new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute, and its latest teaser shows a Nissan logo against bright yellow paint, the hero colour of the Frontier Pro, also known as the Navara Pro in the Philippines.

The company says it will reveal an “exciting new addition” to its Australian range on Thursday, 8 October, promising electrified performance and new levels of capability.

Nissan teases an Australian-specific model

Nissan says the highly anticipated dual-cab ute model has been tailored to Australian customers and extensively tested and tuned for local conditions.

The company is inviting customers, fans and media to watch for the announcement. Examples of the Frontier Pro have already been spotted testing in Australia, including vehicles towing heavy trailers, climbing steep grades and tackling off-road conditions.

The four-wheel-drive Frontier/Navara Pro was revealed in China in April 2025. Despite carrying the Frontier name, it isn’t based on the US-built Nissan Frontier; instead, it uses the Chinese Dongfeng Z9 as its foundation.

Under the bonnet sits a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a transmission-mounted electric motor and a 33kWh ternary lithium battery.

Drive typeFour-wheel drive
EV range (NEDC)131km
Fuel consumption7.2L/100km
Braked towing3500kg
V2L outputUp to 6kW

Towing capacity reaches 3500kg with brakes, matching the unrelated diesel-powered Navara, and its claimed 700mm wading depth also adds to its off-road credentials

Nissan’s new ute could also bring a serious capability fight to Australia’s growing PHEV ute segment. The Frontier/Navara Pro should eclipse the BYD Shark 6’s off-road capability, thanks to an electro-mechanically locking rear differential. The BYD currently leads Australia’s growing PHEV ute segment in sales.

What’s inside

The cabin combines digital displays with a large central touchscreen, and it gets a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen. Buyers can also specify heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, along with a panoramic sunroof.

Nissan’s Chinese model pipeline

The Frontier/Navara Pro isn’t expected to be Nissan Australia’s only PHEV introduction, and it also isn’t expected to be the only model developed through the Dongfeng Nissan joint venture considered for Australia.

Nissan Australia has confirmed it is evaluating several Chinese Nissan models for a local launch. That list includes the upcoming Terrano PHEV off-road SUV, which was previewed in concept form at this year’s Auto China show.

The company is also considering the NX8, a medium-to-large crossover SUV sold in China as either an electric vehicle (EV) or extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). For now, though, the focus is firmly on the PHEV ute, and Nissan’s Australian reveal is scheduled for Thursday, 8 October.
