Nissan has officially removed the Pathfinder large SUV and Juke small SUV from the Australian market, effective immediately, as the brand sharpens its focus on hybrid technology and four-wheel-drive models.

The decision comes amid sluggish sales for both nameplates and a lack of suitable electrified replacements in the pipeline, with Nissan Australia confirming there is no remaining stock available at dealerships.

Shift towards hybrid and 4WD strategy

Nissan Australia managing director Andrew Humberstone said the move was part of a broader effort to streamline the brand’s portfolio and prioritise models that better suit local demand.

“In terms of cleansing products that are no longer fit for market, and there is not enough critical mass, we don’t need Juke, we don’t need Pathfinder, as great a product as it is,” he said.

The company is now doubling down on hybrid powertrains and traditional four-wheel-drive offerings, with future growth expected to centre around models like the Patrol and Navara.

Humberstone indicated that hybrids will play a dominant role in the brand’s future, estimating they could account for around 75 percent of total sales volume in Australia.

Slow sales seal their fate

Both SUVs struggled to gain traction in recent years. The Pathfinder recorded just 732 sales last year, while the Juke managed 734 deliveries in 2025, figures that fell short of expectations in their respective segments.

Despite a recent runout campaign with discounted pricing, the Pathfinder failed to generate enough momentum, while the Juke’s quirky design and petrol-only drivetrain limited its appeal in an increasingly electrified market.

No replacement on the horizon

A key factor behind the decision is the absence of next-generation models suited to Australian requirements.

The current Pathfinder, introduced in 2022 to rival the Toyota Kluger and Hyundai Santa Fe, relied on a naturally aspirated V6 petrol engine without any hybrid option, a significant drawback as buyers increasingly shift towards electrified SUVs.

Meanwhile, a new-generation Juke is under development for Europe, but it is expected to be electric-only, making it less viable for the Australian market in the short term, given infrastructure and demand considerations.

Nissan’s revised Australian line-up

Following the axing of the Pathfinder and Juke, Nissan’s local range now consists of six models: Patrol, Navara, Z sports car, X-Trail, Ariya, and Qashqai.

The brand is also preparing to introduce updates, including a new Navara and Patrol, along with expanded hybrid offerings, such as a two-wheel-drive hybrid variant of the X-Trail, while the Qashqai has already transitioned to a hybrid-only lineup.

A broader business reset

The move comes as Nissan continues to navigate financial challenges globally, including declining sales and profits in recent years. A proposed merger with Honda, which fell through roughly a year ago, has also added pressure on the automaker to refine its strategy.

By focusing on higher-demand segments and electrified technologies, Nissan is aiming to rebuild momentum in key markets like Australia, even if it means saying goodbye to long-standing nameplates like the Pathfinder, which first arrived locally in 1986, and the distinctive Juke.
