The iconic V8-powered Nissan Patrol is nearing the end of its road in Australia, with Nissan confirming production of the Y62 Patrol for the local market will cease in Japan this August. The Australian-engineered Patrol Warrior by Premcar will also conclude production shortly after, marking the end of an era for one of the country’s most recognisable large SUVs.

The announcement gives Australian buyers a final opportunity to purchase a brand-new Patrol powered by Nissan’s naturally aspirated 5.6-litre petrol V8 before the next-generation Y63 Patrol arrives later this year with a downsized twin-turbocharged V6 engine.

End of the V8 Patrol era

Nissan Patrol V8 Axed

The outgoing Y62 Patrol has been on sale in Australia since 2013 and is the last Patrol generation to feature Nissan’s 5.6-litre V8 petrol engine. Producing 298kW of power and 560Nm of torque, the engine has earned a loyal following among towing enthusiasts, off-road adventurers and large-family SUV buyers.

Its replacement, the all-new Y63 Patrol, has already been revealed globally and will introduce a new 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 powertrain when Australian orders open later in 2026.

Nissan Oceania Managing Director Steve Milette said the Y62 Patrol has played a significant role in the model’s Australian success story.

“The Patrol has been a constant presence in Australian motoring, and the Y62 has played a defining role in that legacy. Its 5.6-litre V8 is part of what has made this generation so beloved by enthusiasts, families and adventurers alike,” Milette said.

He added that the Y62’s departure represents a genuine last-chance opportunity for buyers wanting a factory-fresh V8-powered Patrol.

Few nameplates have a stronger connection to Australia than the Nissan Patrol.

The Patrol first arrived locally in 1961 as the second-generation G60 Datsun Patrol and has since become one of the longest-running vehicle nameplates in the automotive industry.

Over five generations, more than 258,000 Patrols have been delivered to Australian customers, helping establish a devoted fan base across the country.

Australia has also played a key role in building the Patrol’s rugged reputation. In 1962, geologist Reg Sprigg and his family became the first people to cross the Simpson Desert in a motor vehicle using a Patrol, completing a journey across more than 1,100 sand dunes along what is now known as the French Line.

The Patrol’s off-road credentials were later reinforced through motorsport success, including 15 consecutive Australian Off-Road Championship titles between 1983 and 1998 and four outright victories in the Australasian Safari.

Patrol Warrior also reaching the end

Patrol Warrior

The end of Y62 production also means the final chapter for the Patrol Warrior by Premcar.

Developed in collaboration with Melbourne-based engineering specialist Premcar, the Patrol Warrior builds on the standard Y62 with extensive upgrades designed specifically for Australian conditions.

Key enhancements include:

  • Locally developed suspension tuning
  • Increased ground clearance
  • All-terrain tyres
  • Unique alloy wheels
  • Exterior styling upgrades
  • Bi-modal side-exit exhaust system

Each Patrol Warrior undergoes a secondary-stage manufacturing process in Australia and retains Nissan’s factory warranty coverage.

According to Nissan, the Warrior represents the ultimate expression of the V8 Patrol, combining Australian engineering expertise with the model’s proven off-road capability.

Y63 Patrol arriving later this year

While the Y62 is preparing to bow out, Nissan is already looking ahead to the next-generation Y63 Patrol.

The new model has been revealed internationally and is expected to bring major changes, including updated technology, a redesigned interior and the new twin-turbo V6 engine.

Australian order books are scheduled to open later in 2026, although local pricing and specifications are yet to be announced.

Final Stocks Available Now

Nissan says remaining Y62 Patrol and Patrol Warrior stock is available through dealerships nationwide, though availability will vary depending on model grade and dealer inventory.

For buyers seeking one of Australia’s last factory-built V8-powered full-size SUVs, the clock is now ticking.

With production ending in August and the transition to the twin-turbo V6-powered Y63 approaching, the current Patrol could become a sought-after collector’s vehicle in the years ahead.
